Purpose of the Role
As a Senior Backend Developer on Knak’s AI Engineering team, you will design, build, and scale robust backend systems that empower AI agents to analyze diverse data and autonomously generate complex visual marketing assets. This role is pivotal to enhancing our platform’s intelligence and automation capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- What: Develop, maintain, and optimize RESTful APIs using Laravel (PHP).
How: Apply best practices for testability, observability, error handling, and documentation.
Outcome: Ensure reliable and performant API services. - What: Create and maintain Python and Node.js microservices for AI Agent hosting and interaction with LLMs.
How: Build efficient backend logic to parse AI-generated outputs in the platform editor.
Outcome: Enable seamless AI-driven content generation. - What: Design solutions across the full stack using object-oriented and functional programming.
How: Select appropriate paradigms based on use case.
Outcome: Deliver robust, maintainable, and scalable software. - What: Optimize interactions with MySQL databases.
How: Use ORMs, query tuning, and indexing.
Outcome: Improve data performance and reduce latency. - What: Deploy and manage backend systems using AWS.
How: Use Lambda functions, CDN-based delivery, and memory optimization.
Outcome: Ensure secure, scalable, and cost-efficient infrastructure. - What: Participate in and lead code reviews.
How: Provide feedback and uphold coding standards.
Outcome: Maintain high code quality and team collaboration. - What: Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
How: Translate business and technical requirements into solutions.
Outcome: Deliver features aligned with user and business needs. - What: Mentor peers and junior engineers.
How: Share knowledge and lead by example.
Outcome: Promote a learning culture and technical excellence.
Scope & Decision-Making
This role contributes to high-impact technical design and architecture decisions across the AI product line. It involves independent decision-making for backend development, while collaborating on strategic priorities with team leads and stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- 6+ years of backend software development experience
- Proficiency in PHP (Laravel), Python, Node.js, MySQL
- Strong experience with RESTful APIs, TDD, and CI/CD (GitHub Actions)
- Familiarity with microservices, SaaS architecture, and AWS services
- Understanding of observability, performance tuning, and system scalability
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
