About the program:
AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.
About you:
- Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar—or equivalent release/configuration experience.
- Strong skills in release management, scheduling, and stakeholder coordination.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (e.g. GitLab pipelines).
- Proven experience with version control and repository management (e.g. GitLab, Nexus).
- Solid understanding of Agile/DevSecOps practices.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide technical teams and influence stakeholders.
- An Australian NV-1 security clearance and ability to access/handle Export Controlled technology, data and information.
- Prior experience as a Release Manager or Build Manager in large-scale software projects.
- Familiarity with containerisation/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge of configuration management in regulated or safety-critical industries (e.g. defence, aerospace).

Your responsibilities will include:
Are you an experienced software engineer with a passion for release management and delivery excellence? This role is your opportunity to take the lead on one of Australia’s most significant defence programs, where your expertise will ensure software is built, integrated, and released to the highest standards.
Working on the AIR6500 program, you’ll combine hands-on technical knowledge with leadership of the release and configuration function. You’ll own the planning, coordination, and governance of software releases, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance across the lifecycle. This is a perfect next step for a senior engineer or Release Manager who wants to move into a leadership position within a modern Agile DevSecOps environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and manage release schedules, coordinating across integration, verification & validation (V&V), and delivery teams.
- Oversee build and deployment pipelines, ensuring smooth promotion through environments.
- Develop and enforce release governance processes, balancing speed with quality and compliance.
- Identify, track, and mitigate release-related risks and dependencies.
- Define and refine processes that maintain configuration control across the program.
- Ensure software elements are correctly baselined and integrated into the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
- Champion best practice in CI/CD pipelines, version control, and change management.
- Lead configuration audits and guide developers through issue resolution.
- Mentor and support team members, embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
