This position works in the Development organizational unit. This is supervisory, technical planning, administrative and public relations work involving responsibility for processing and approving of various development applications including Preliminary Plan Approval (PPA) and/or Subdivision related applications. An employee in a position of this class supervises the work of one or more technical subordinates engaged in the processing of development applications and independently processes the more complex applications which involves checking same for compliance with the applicable regulations, by-laws, and legislation. The processing of the applications can include suggesting improvements or alternatives regarding building design, siting, layout and related matters, encouraging development that is harmonious with adjacent properties and coordinating processing of applications with other Municipal departments and agencies concerned. In addition, the work may involve preparing and submitting reports to the Board of Variance or other bodies regarding reviews and appeals and representing the Department at meetings of the same. Although the primary focus of the work of this class is the processing of development applications under PPA and/or Subdivision, an incumbent may at times and in a similar manner, process and approve applications for other types of Development Permits. An incumbent exercises considerable independence of judgement and action in all aspects of the work, including in encouraging a high standard of development throughout various stages of a project or application. Applications of a complex or contentious nature are discussed with a supervisor, while those involving re-zoning considerations involve other professional planning staff who require input from the incumbent or his/her subordinates regarding the proposal. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of three years of university training in architecture, community planning, geography or a related discipline, university degree in above discipline preferable, and sound related experience and some supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
This position is a temporary full time position until June 30, 2026.
