Full Time/Part Time: Part Time – Up to Full Time Equivalency: 50%

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary – Not to Exceed July 31, 2026

Other Conditions: Extramural funds. Appointment to begin approximately October 1, 2025 or as soon thereafter

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the immediate supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), using Machine Learning techniques, carry out empirical analysis of admission records to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities in Hawaii and post-discharge outcomes and clinical endpoints.
  • Build, test and compare Random Forest, XGBoost and logistic regression specifications.
  • Systematically search and summarize research literature on treatment and recovery.
  • Assist with data abstraction, cleaning, management, coding of and analyzing a large SUD treatment and recovery support dataset.
  • Support the development, writing, and formatting of abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • To meet with PI weekly to discuss progress.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Classified, full-time graduate student in economics, computer science, engineering, medicine, public health, or similar field at UH Manoa.
  • Attention to detail for meeting milestones and deliverables in a timely manner
  • Advanced analytical software skills e.g., R, SAS, or Stata as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  • Advanced skills in statistics as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  • Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (For international students: TOEFL scores of 600/100 (paper/Internet) or above, with subtest scores of 25 for listening and 25 for speaking, or IELTS score of 7.0 or above for the overall band test results)

Desirable Qualifications

  • A doctoral student at UH Manoa
  • Familiarity with substance use research, treatment research in substance use, healthcare research through previous coursework and/or work experience
  • Experience with applied research, working in the community, or volunteering
  • Experience preparing research reports and/or scientific publications, data presentations and data visualizations
