Senior Principal Engineer, Platform Engineering

Fastly is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to represent our Platform Engineering organization, with a specialized focus on Trust and Identity infrastructure. This is a strategic, high-impact individual contributor role for a technically exceptional engineer with deep experience in secure platform services.

You will report directly to senior leadership and drive the execution of initiatives foundational to Fastly’s internal authentication, identity, and access control systems. This is a hands-on engineering leadership position, ideal for someone who thrives on solving complex problems, guiding architecture, and mentoring senior engineers—while keeping systems secure, scalable, and resilient.

This role is designed for an engineer who excels at strategic problem solving, technical mentorship, and leading by example. You will help shape Fastly’s internal trust architecture for years to come.

What You'll Do:

  • Drive Strategy & Execution: Define the long-term vision for trust and identity infrastructure and translate it into tangible execution plans aligned with business goals
  • Lead full lifecycle Architecture & Delivery: Design and implement scalable internal trust solutions such as secrets management, PKI, and authentication services
  • Own Complex Challenges: Tackle ambiguous, technically demanding initiatives with multiple stakeholders and organization-wide impact
  • Cross-Functional leadership: Partner deeply with Product, Security, Compliance, and other Engineering teams
  • Impact Management: Proactively identify potential situations that could negatively affect the business or customers and develop strategies to mitigate these risks before they escalate.
  • Promote Engineering Excellence: Establish and evangelize technical standards, code quality, reliability, and operational maturity
  • Mentor and support the professional growth of engineers, fostering a culture of respect, knowledge sharing, innovation, and collaboration within the team. Lead by example. Be an active implementer and team member

What We're Looking For:

  • Proven, hands-on experience building complex, resilient, and scalable infrastructure. Most Senior Principal Engineers at Fastly have at least 12 years of domain relevant engineering experience.
  • 5+ years experience in a technical leadership capacity as an individual contributor
  • Recent experience developing complex applications in Go and other languages, with an aptitude for learning new languages and technologies
  • Proven success leading cross-team initiatives in areas such as internal authentication, identity federation, secrets management, or trust systems
  • Strong systems engineering background with deep experience in Linux, networking, and distributed systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern programming languages (e.g., Go, Python) and infrastructure tooling (e.g., Terraform, Vault, Consul, Chef)
  • Experience navigating security and compliance requirements in highly regulated environments (e.g., FedRAMP, SOC2, ISO 27001)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts for varying audiences and produce clear and comprehensive documentation
  • A collaborative mindset with experience working across cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of respect, knowledge sharing and innovation influencing technical decisions at the org level
  • Proven ability to mentor and support the growth of engineers, both within a specific area of expertise and more broadly across the organization

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • Implementing zero-trust architectures or identity-aware access proxies
  • Designing scalable secrets lifecycle management workflows
  • Working with PKI and certificate automation at scale
  • Contributing to open source identity or security tooling
  • Leading post-incident analysis and operationalizing learnings into system improvements
