About the role

As the Graduate - Biodiversity and Spatial Data, you are integral to the success of V/Line’s People, Risk, Safety & Sustainability Group. 

The environmental sustainability aspect of the Groups responsibilities works to enable V/Line to set ambitious but achievable goals with respect to emissions, flora, fauna, and heritage.

Across all this, the Group promotes a safety and risk awareness culture in V/Line and practical day to day support for the service delivery and customer facing functions.

As a member of the People, Risk, Safety & Sustainability Group and a part of the Biodiversity and Natural Resources Department, the Graduate – Biodiversity and Spatial Data is to support the implementation of the V/Line ISO triple certified Integrated Management System, through the management of biodiversity values and the provision of quality spatial data.

The role supports the management of environmental risk associated with the natural environment and the preservation of biodiversity values and provides internal and external support relating to spatial data, mapping, biodiversity and climate adaptation.

In addition, the roll will undertake environmental spatial data mapping and analysis within V/Line’s Geographical Information System (GIS), as well as spatial data analysis relating to climate risk and adaptation.

As well as performing duties specified in this position description, an employee may be required to undertake other duties of functions consistent with their classification, capabilities, and skills

Key accountabilities include:

  • Support biodiversity projects and initiatives across the organisation
  • Coordinate site visits and surveys as required, to identify biodiversity opportunities and engage with staff on-site
  • Identifying and applying for grants and applications for biodiversity uplift projects, submissions, and recognition
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including councils, landcare groups and other environmental organisations, to support the delivery of internal biodiversity uplift initiatives and embed environmental best practice
  • Support the provision of advice and information on biodiversity and natural resource management to the V/Line community
  • Interface with communications teams to produce collateral, communications, and related media
  • Support the management of V/Line’s environmental spatial data sets, and provide mapping and spatial data interpretation as appropriate
  • Support the maintenance of environmental data sets
  • Support the Head of Biodiversity and Natural Resources in leading V/Line to align with State and Federal biodiversity strategy, targets and objectives
  • Support the preparation of environmental reporting
  • Support the development and alignment of environmental documentation relating to biodiversity, natural resource management, and climate adaptation
  • Support the development and delivery of climate adaptation action planning
  • Support environmental audits and investigations


About you

The Graduate - Biodiversity and Spatial Data will report directly to the Manager Biodiversity and Heritage Programs.

You are responsible for supporting the development and delivery of biodiversity uplift activities, most notably through the Biodiversity Uplift Action Plan. 

The role includes the monitoring of identified sites and the provision of advice on biodiversity and natural resources to support the achievement of State, Commonwealth and other targets. 

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in environmental science, environmental management, geography, science (geospatial), environmental engineering or relevant field (mandatory), completed 2024 or 2025
  • Foundational understanding of spatial data management and systems, preferably with ARC GIS
  • Understanding of biodiversity, natural resource management concepts and processes
  • Strong analytical thinking and data management ability
  • Strong communication and engagement skills
  • Strong attention to detail ensuring accuracy and quality of work
  • Passion for positive biodiversity outcomes
  • Being collaborative and inclusive, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and build strong relationships across the organisation.
  • Operating in an ethical and trustworthy manner and handles sensitive data and information with integrity and discretion.
  • Strong customer focus by being committed to delivering value and improving the experience for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Current Driver’s license
  • Demonstrated alignment with V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.
     

Some travel and a willingness to work on-site from time to time across the V/Line rail network is expected. Primary office location will be out of Melbourne CBD.

This role is a Medical Category 3 position.

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023 and be paid at Clerk C1 ($79,665 p.a.) plus Leave Loading and Superannuation.
