Job Profile

There is a temporary opening for the above position within the Legal and Realty Services Division, Office of the City Manager Department. The Assistant City Solicitor will provide advice to the Mayor, Council, the City Manager, and staff of the City in respect of all general legal matters before the Corporation (includes but not limited to providing advice on matters related to risk management, planning and development, environmental law, real estate, contracts, construction, procurement, tax and assessment, by-laws, policies, and procedure), as well as represents the Corporation before all levels of Courts and tribunals.

 

What you will be doing

  • Represents the Corporation at various levels of court, and administrative tribunals, as may be required.
  • Negotiate and draft various agreements, contracts, licenses, leases, and other corporate documents. 
  • Review legislation, case law, statues, regulations, and legal publications for the purpose of keeping abreast of changes in the law and research purposes.
  • Attends Management Committee Meetings, Meetings of Council and Committees of Council, as required. Makes recommendations to the City Solicitor and other members of staff regarding legal and risk management decisions of the Corporation.  
  • Provides advice related to actions of all other departments (including the Mayor and Council) regarding recommendations, by-laws and policies, being brought forward for Council’s consideration, both orally and in written form.   
  • Prepares, screens and carries out court prosecutions for all by-law and building code related infractions, as well as other prosecutions as assigned, such as planning matters.
  • Researches and advises on all areas of municipal law. Offers training to enforcement agencies of the Corporation in the area of note-taking, as well as Court preparation and procedure.

Education

  • Possess LL.B. or J.D. and be member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
  • Must have an undergraduate degree in addition to successful completion of an articling term and comprehensive Provincial exams that equate to approximately 18 months after graduating from post graduate law school. 

Experience and Knowledge

The successful candidate will have three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience, preferably in a municipal environment.  The ideal candidate will require excellent organizational, interpersonal, presentation, communication and computer skills combined with knowledge of municipal government operations.

This position is within Grade 9 of the non-union salary schedule and has an annual salary range of $133,970 to $163,381.  

Location of position

This position is located at Cambridge City Hall, 50 Dickson Street, Cambridge Ontario. 

Hours of work

Standard hours of work are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some evening hours and flexibility may be required.
