Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.
Position Purpose of The Field Ops Volunteer Leader: The Field Ops Volunteer Leader is responsible for orchestrating the fulfillment of direct custom orders through the Drive Thru Food Pantry program and leading volunteer groups of 20-40 people. This position will ensure accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to food safety standards. Key duties include managing inventory using warehouse systems and forklifts, assisting with operations planning, volunteer training, and supporting technology implementation to improve fulfillment while maintaining a safe and respectful environment for both volunteers and food recipients. All responsibilities shall be consistent with Gleaners Food Bank’s mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of The Field Ops Volunteer Leader:
- Work hands-on leading volunteers with neighbor ordering and order fulfillment to make Drive Thru Food Pantry orders ready for real-time distribution. Orders may include dry, refrigerated, and frozen products. Groups of volunteers range from 20-40 people.
- Work with Volunteer team to plan for volunteer needs and create volunteer training to support.
- Be the first line of troubleshooting for volunteer issues during distributions.
- Treat all Neighbors and Volunteers with dignity, compassion, and respect
- Responsible for setting up, leading, and tearing down Drive Thru Food Pantry distributions of 20+ items.
- Assist Supervisor in all operations as the distributions are multi-faceted and fast-paced.
- Use warehouse inventory management system and forklift to replenish and move products.
- Assist with weekly inventory counts as required.
- Manage and monitor daily inventory needs.
- Implement new technology created for fulfillment, understand and deploy for more accurate and efficient work activity.
- Log and communicate volunteer feedback to inform future software development
- Assist Supervisor in developing training for volunteers and/or partners as well as developing new processes for DTFP.
- Collect and provide data, analysis, reports, and information as needed.
- Crosstrain with other field operations staff, serving as a resource to Home Delivery, Gleaners2Go, and/or other field operations as needed.
- Work safely and operate powered and manual warehouse equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
- Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
- Active participation in staff, departmental, board or board committee meetings as requested.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience of The Field Ops Volunteer Leader:
- High School diploma/GED or equivalent experience
- 1-2 years of administrative/order entry and customer service experience preferred.
- Grocery retail experience preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) Strongly Preferred
Other Skills and Abilities of The Field Ops Volunteer Leader:
- Knowledgeable in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Ability to train and lead a group of individuals
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and relationship management skills
- Ability to perform basic math functions, to count accurately and maintain accurate records
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to think creatively
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Distinguish between case and pallet counts versus pallet weights as required, understand pallet numbers, inventory lots, and warehouse locations
- ERP (Warehouse/Inventory Management System)
- Forklift certification (or ability to be certified)
- Detail oriented
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
- A commitment to full and visible participation as a hunger relief leader in the community
- Experience with manual and electronic warehouse documentation tools including barcode hardware
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and work in a fast-paced environment with multifaceted demands
