Full Time Shelter Staff oversees the proper functioning and operations of the Emergency Family Shelter, under the direction of the Program Manager, Shelter and Housing. This position contributes to the overall health, safety, and welfare of shelter residents. This role monitors shelter activities, performs interventions, maintains documentation, and communicates vital information with other staff and management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain community living environment that is clean, safe, and healthy, in accordance with agency policies and procedures. Document shelter activities and incidents throughout the shift. Prepare shift reports in the guest file and provide verbal report. Enter shift reports in the daily log as needed. Accurately enter data into appropriate program databases during shift. Administer client records with accuracy, while maintaining confidentiality.
- Perform rounds on a regular basis during the shift and be available for clients’ needs.
- Assist with food preparation and service as needed.
- Inform and advise the Shelter Coordinator, or on-call personnel, of problematic areas promptly and efficiently.
- Intervene and appropriately de-escalate crises as needed.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for families with children who are staying at the shelter by ensuring that policies and procedures are being followed.
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shelter facility, reporting any repair and supply needs to the Shelter Coordinator.
- Perform required duties on each shift including additional assigned work as directed by the Shelter Coordinator or Program Manager.
- Answer phone calls and work with external entities, providing accurate information with courtesy and professionalism.
Requirements
- One year certificate from a college or technical school; 3-6 months related job experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working at a shelter facility preferred. Knowledge of community social services and experience working with the homeless population preferred.
- Solid knowledge of human and social service programs and practices.
- Ability to express ideas and thoughts clearly in both written and verbal form.
- Good interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people having diverse social concerns and problems, while maintaining personal boundaries.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines while dealing with a constant influx of problems and interruptions.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond professionally to inquiries from clients, community-based organizations, regulatory agencies, and the general public.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software. Ability to learn program specific software applications.
Additional Expectations
- May be required to work additional shifts outside of schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must remain awake and alert during shift, including overnight shifts.
- Ability to pass a criminal background screening, including Child and Dependent Adult Abuse registry check is required. Compliance with Safe Environment training and monthly bulletins.
- Must maintain absolute confidentiality of information, written or verbal, according to policy and legal requirements.
- Attend staff meetings, community meetings, approved seminars, agency trainings/retreats, and professional conferences.
- Possess a strong commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities including the understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and ability to demonstrate the philosophy and values of the agency.
