About the Department
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and improvements of City facilities, rights-of-way, medians, and other contractual sites throughout the city.
Position Duties
- Mows grass, trim shrubbery, clears, and landscapes property.
- Paints, repairs fences and gates, removes leaves and other debris.
- Operates equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as mowing machines, hand tools, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, mulches, and other equipment as assigned.
- Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment such as lubrication and adjusting and sharpening mower blades.
- Learns to identify desirable and undesirable plants and vegetation; cut weeds to clear fields and wooded areas of undergrowth; removes vines from and prunes trees as directed.
- Performs litter control, weeding, trimming; walks through brush or entangled areas along creeks and other areas.
- Works safely near high-speed vehicle traffic such as medians.
- Moves or aids in moving heavy containers or equipment, and large or bulky objects.
- May assist with the mixing and application of sprays and fertilizers.
- Maintains all city-owned property, right of ways, and any other areas designated by the City Manager, City Council, or another designee.
- Maintains a fiscally responsible budget.
- Manages all employees assigned.
- Maintains all city-owned equipment assigned to his/her department.
- Maintains all street repairs, potholes, and grading
- Repairs city sidewalks as needed
- Orders all street signs and hardware associated
- Supervises concrete repairs for all local streets
- Coordinates street sweeping and clean-up
- Coordinates curb repairs and painting
- Reads meters as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Attendance; regular and timely attendance during assigned work hours. After-hours and weekend work are required as necessary.
- Deadlines; ability to set and meet appropriate deadlines. Timely follow-up and follow-through with staff and others. Effectively multi-task and work under time pressure and deadlines.
- Communication & Record Keeping; ability to read, comprehend and effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, in English. Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, volunteers, council, and others.
- Financial; ensure all expenditures are within budget. Utilize corporate credit cards ethically and responsibly. Submit receipts monthly. Ensure all financial functions, recordkeeping, and reporting are performed timely and accurately and that records as properly created and maintained.
- Policies & Procedures; perform duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, standards, and comply with local, state, and federal law.
- Safety; follow safety policies and rules.
- Stay Current; keep up with trends and changes.

Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent required; 2 years experience in grounds maintenance. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening, and physical and criminal background check. Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and ability to drive; maintain and provide proof of liability insurance. Have and maintain a professional, inviting, and friendly demeanor. Must have a working cell phone and the ability to respond to after-hours calls.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communication ability.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to certain environmental conditions may be necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, including; Over two-thirds of the on-the-job time; wet or humid conditions; working near moving, mechanical parts; working in high, previous places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme heat; vibration.
