About the Department

This is the first level in the Service Worker series.  Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.

The Role:
The Airport Service Worker position performs inspections and maintains the airport facility conditions to ensure safe, secure, and efficient airport operations, and that maintenance, operations, emergency, and security functions are compatible with local, state, and federal regulations.

The ideal candidate for the role will have one year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
Salary:
This position is a Grade 310 with an annual salary between $42,714-$64,071

Holiday, Vacation & Sick Leave:
Regular status position’s offer:

  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).

Position Duties

1. Performs daily safety and security checks around aprons, taxilanes, perimeter fence, aircraft hangars, and other airport airside and landside areas. Questions unfamiliar people entering the Air Operations Area, reports issues, and takes or suggest corrective actions as needed.
2. Conducts inspections of runways, taxiways, lighting, signage, and surfaces to ensure safety
3. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning as needed..
4. Responds to emergencies and weather events; monitors environmental conditions and hazardous materials, ensuring safety and compliance.
5. Mows the airfield grass using a mower tractor and sweeps the airfield pavement using a street sweeper truck or a pick-up truck with a FOD Boss attached.
6. Communicates effectively with all airport stakeholders; enforces safety and security rules and issues warning or violations.
7. Supports operational documentation, including logs, notices, and oversight of contractors and construction activities.
8. Controls access to facilities and oversees security procedures.
9. Performs general support tasks to maintain safety and order as assigned
10. Operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment may operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.




Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment. 

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

Knowledge of:

• Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
• Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility

• Basic airport operations and local, state, and federal airport rules and regulations.

• Microsoft Office products and other relevant technology

Ability to:

 • Work in a physically demanding environment.
• Understand and follow safe working practices.
• Operate city vehicles
• Identify, communicate, enforce, and resolve potentially unsafe conditions, both airside and landside.
• Learn, read, understand, enforce, and explain City and FAA policies and procedures.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens

• Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
 • Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license

Special Requirements:

• This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
• Valid Arizona class D driver license.

 May be required to work weekends and holidays.

Other Qualifications

Work involves heavy lifting of 50 to 75 pounds, pushing/pulling trash containers and other objects, operating hand-held tools and power tools, extensive walking, bending, standing, lifting, raking and crawling; standing on ladders. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may enter, exit, and operate vehicles. Exposure to aviation traffic, weather extremes; hazardous materials, dust, insects, and gases.
