The Public Health Nurse III - School Health Team Leader is responsible for conducting comprehensive health assessments, developing and implementing personalized care plans, and collaborating with school staff, parents, and community agencies to address student health needs effectively. This role also includes mentoring new hires, leading annual in-service training for school nursing staff, and participating in policy development and program audits to ensure adherence to best practices in school health. This role requires the use of a personal vehicle for travel between schools; mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related travel. When performing home visits, employees may utilize a county car for travel.
Position Duties
A well-qualified applicant shall have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs,
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health
Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, school health nursing practice.
Knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed.
General knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others,
Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgement in appraising situations and making decisions.
Ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or
Masters in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or
Graduation from a school of professional nursing and three years of professional nursing experience; or
An equivalent combination of training and experience. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Driver's License required.
Other Qualifications
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Expertise: Provide guidance in school health nursing practices to ensure a tailored approach to the specific health needs of students and staff.
- Mentorship: Develop and deliver an annual in-service training presentation for school nurses, covering current nursing techniques and relevant topics in school health. Ensure all nurses are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care.
- Orientation/Support for New Hires: Assist the nursing supervisor team in onboarding and mentoring new hires, providing in-school orientation/preceptorship to foster confidence and competency in their roles.
- Collaboration and Policy Development: Attend biannual meetings with school health supervisors and regional school nurse consultants to collaborate with various stakeholders, ensuring adherence to best practices and current guidelines.
- Comprehensive Health Assessments and Care Plans: Serve as an assigned nurse in 2-3 schools, conducting assessments of children's health needs, creating care plans, and working closely with parents and staff to effectively address these needs.
- Quality Assurance and Improvement: Assist the school health leadership team with policy reviews, guideline maintenance, and program audits, ensuring adaptability to emerging health challenges and trends.
- Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
