The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Animal Care Attendant Supervisor, grade G16 position, in the Animal Services Division.


About the Position

This is a senior/lead position which directs and provides supervision in the kennel care operations of the Animal Services Division. The position is responsible for the humane and proper handling of shelter animals. You will be supervising a team of 5-6 people ensuring daily assignments are done, disciplinary action, holding them accountable for take care of animals in the shelter. You will also become certified in Euthanasia by injection and understand animal health and diseases. This position is considered essential personnel in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4. 

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division). 

Position Duties

  • Supervise, lead, and train Animal Care Attendants in the performance of their duties.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance of kennels, cages, and animal holding areas in accordance with established policies and procedures. 

  • Maintain accountability and daily control of the animals in the shelter.

  • Evaluate and counsel subordinates with proper animal husbandry.

  • Ensure animals that arrive at the shelter are processed thoroughly.

  • Ensure all animals are vaccinated and dewormed as necessary.

  • Supervise kennel staff to ensure the performance of daily inspections of the animals holding areas for the health and welfare of the animals.

  • Purchase shelter supplies, perform inventories, and order pharmaceuticals for the animals.

  • Ensure staff receives training in a variety of positions in the Animal Services Division.

  • Identify staff training and development needs.

  • Ensure that techniques for properly handling and caring for all animals are utilized.

  • Ensure proper training for the administration of vaccinations and other medications.

  • Ensure staff training in basic and common animal disease recognition, as well as identifying animal species, breed, age, and gender.

  • Assist Animal Care Attendants with preparing and entering animal information into the database upon arriving at the shelter.

  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an animal care/sheltering environment, to include one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience.

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered. 


Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 + years of experience.

  • Euthanasia by injection certified.

  • Animal tech supervisor or Extensive Supervisor Skills.

  • Prior knowledge of government rules and regulations.

  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
