About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Purchasing Coordinator in the Finance Department. The Finance Department is responsible for providing accurate, timely, and transparent financial services to support the City’s operations. This position will support purchasing activities, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations while assisting departments with procurement needs and surplus property management.
What you’ll be doing:
Process purchase requisitions and purchase orders, including contract verification, cooperative contract compliance, and required documentation.
Back up for coordinating the sale and disposal of surplus property such as vehicles, technology equipment, and other City assets.
Issue Requests for Quotes (RFQs) and small informal bids, evaluate submissions, and prepare award recommendations.
Verify compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing purchasing, surplus disposal, and bidding/contracting.
Prepare and maintain purchase-related documentation, spreadsheets, and reports.
Provide customer service to internal staff, vendors, and bidders regarding purchasing and surplus processes.
Operate office equipment, including computers, to manage purchasing activities and documentation.
Support departmental operations by assisting with requisition entry, purchase order receiving training, and other related tasks.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, and vendors to coordinate purchasing activities and resolve issues.
Support assigned Purchasing Specialist.

Salary: $24.76 Hourly

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
At least two years of experience in purchasing or finance, AND
Associate Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field, OR
Four years of experience in purchasing or finance plus a High School Diploma/GED
Performance aptitudes:
Ability to review, analyze, and classify purchasing and vendor data for accuracy and compliance.
Ability to collaborate and persuade in order to coordinate purchasing activities and resolve issues.
Ability to operate office equipment and computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
Ability to clearly communicate with staff, vendors, and the public.
Ability to perform calculations involving percentages, decimals, fractions, and interpret bid tabulations.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and adapt methods to meet purchasing objectives.
Ability to evaluate information, apply rules, and make sound decisions.
Physical requirements:
Light physical effort may be required, including lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds.
Extended periods of sitting and working at a computer may be required.
Tasks may involve distinguishing colors, sounds, and visual cues; oral communication is necessary.
