Position Description:

The General Studies Program at the University of Louisville invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track lecturer beginning January 1, 2026. Areas of specialty are open.

This position carries a 4/4 load. The initial appointment would be for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent on work performance and college budget.

The General Studies Program is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences and was created in 2021 to provide an opportunity for returning adult learners who previously stepped out of college with some credits to complete a degree. All students in the Program, no matter their program track, are required to take GNST303 Introduction to General Studies and the capstone course GNST401. Students wishing to claim credit for work experience may also take GNST305 Prior Learning Assessment. The appointee will be required to teach all of these courses, all of which are currently offered as asynchronous online courses only. A demonstrable commitment to online instruction, working with the needs of returning adult learners and experience of prior learning assessment frameworks is preferred.

The General Studies Program should not be confused with the University’s General Education requirements. Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the structure of the BS in General Studies https://artsandsciences.louisville.edu/academics-programs/undergraduate-programs/general-studies before completing their application.

Minimum qualifications: master’s degree or 18+ hours of graduate coursework in one of the disciplines housed within UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences or College of Education and Human Development, although a terminal degree is preferred. The position will be filled at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor Term as determined by the candidate’s qualifications. Any terminal degree in progress would need to be granted by April 30, 2026.

Applications are due September 30, 2025. Please submit the following materials: cover letter, CV, and teaching portfolio. The teaching portfolio should consist of a statement of teaching philosophy and a sample syllabus for GNST303 Introduction to General Studies, bearing in mind that this is an asynchronous online course. Your cover letter should clearly explain your interest in the position, highlight your ability to work effectively with returning and degree-completion students, and describe any relevant teaching, mentoring, or facilitation experience that demonstrates your readiness to support adult learners.  For questions, please contact the Director of General Studies, Professor Glynis Ridley,
[email protected].
