About the Department
The Epidemiologist is a senior leader within the Public Health Department, overseeing epidemiology and environmental health programs. Working with broad authority, the position manages staff, ensures regulatory compliance, and leads strategic planning and program evaluation. This role requires advanced expertise in epidemiology, environmental health, and public health operations. Responsibilities include regulatory enforcement, outbreak coordination, budget oversight, and promoting health awareness. The Epidemiologist collaborates across departments and agencies, makes data-driven decisions, and leads efforts to protect community health through policy, communication, and program improvement.
Position Duties
1. Possess a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Biology or closely related field; AND
Have a minimum of two (2) years recent full-time work experience in a governmental agency; preferably a local health department; AND
Minimum two years of professional experience in epidemiology, public health, surveillance, or related field; OR
Possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Environmental Health, Science, Biology or closely related field: AND
Have a minimum of eight (8) years recent full-time management experience in a governmental agency, preferably a local health department;
2. Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
An employee in this class must be in good physical condition such as to allow for the occasional lifting of objects in excess of 35 pounds; and for walking and standing for extended periods in that this employee frequently makes on-site investigations and evaluations.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
May be required to perform quality assurance field investigations and evaluations requiring travel to locations within Muskegon County; and may be exposed to blood, other body fluids, and hazardous waste.

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
