About this Position: 

Seattle Center is seeking a HVAC Technician Supervisor. This position supervises, directs, inspects, and evaluates the work of a crew of HVAC Technicians who operate, maintain, install and repair the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment and other mechanical systems on campus. This position may supervise, direct, inspect and evaluate the work of other Trade groups as assigned by Management.   This position reports to the Assistant Facility Maintenance Supervisor for the Trades group.


To excel in this job, you will need solid technical know-how and strong leadership skills. Technical know-how includes experience with operation of Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS Siemens) on a large multi-facility campus with boiler, refrigeration and HVAC systems. The desired candidate will have a track record for leading and developing teams; proven ability to lead through collaboration and influence, foster and model effective team building skills, coach, counsel and develop employees, including those of different racial, cultural and demographic backgrounds. 

Position Duties

Here is more of what you will be doing:

  • Provide leadership in the day-to-day operations and supervision of staff members including setting clear expectations and directions, fostering creativity, assisting with proactive problem-solving and demonstrating effective decision-making
  • Provide technical expertise and direction to the crew to solve technical operational problems
  • Provide technical expertise to Project Managers, outside contractors, Architects and Engineers
  • Provide training and mentorship for team members
  • Ensure specialized equipment, (including heating ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment,) is properly maintained by staff and qualified maintenance contractors
  • Develop, implement and communicate procedures and policies regarding unit budget, safety, purchasing, staff work scheduling, asset management and reporting systems
  • Evaluate performance of direct reports; provide coaching and recommend discipline when appropriate
  • Develop and monitor productivity metrics; perform scheduled equipment inspections and develop capital replacement schedules
  • Manage and operate water features, elevators, pressure vessels and fire systems
  • Serve as Seattle Center’s Air Quality competent person
  • Understand and integrate energy management practices into existing HVAC systems
  • Represent the department on various intradepartmental and interdepartmental committees, including operations and maintenance, capital investment, and major maintenance projects 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers with a capacity over 20,000,000 BTU/hour input and refrigeration and air conditioning equipment with a capacity of at least fifty tons, including one year of supervisory experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). 


Preference will be given to applicants who possess these Desired Qualifications:

  • Project management, procurement and contracting experience
  • Experience maintaining, installing, troubleshooting and repairing electrical and gas HVAC systems and related equipment
  • Proficiency with building controls software systems including troubleshooting programs
  • Familiarity using MS Office 365 Products including Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint
  • Familiarity using an asset management / work management system
  • Ability to provide clear supervision and management direction in an environment of change
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team, and success in team building and creating unity within diverse groups
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to make difficult and challenging decisions
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience


Certification/Licensing Requirements

  • A City of Seattle Grade II Steam Engineer and Boiler Operating License 
  • A City of Seattle Refrigeration Operating Engineer's License 
  • A current and valid Driver License at the time of application


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work variable shifts including weekends and holidays
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time and to lift up to 50 pounds.  
  • Work is performed in noisy environments
  • Requires working at heights and in restricted areas using precautions and attention to safety procedures/equipment
  • Must be able to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and work with required personal protective equipment in place

Other Qualifications

Seattle Center operates 24/7 on all 365 days per year.  


How to Apply:


The full pay range for this step-progression position is $76.20 - $88.44 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $76.20 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.
