Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.
Job Summary:
As a Lead Software Engineer on the ABC Core Content Technologies engineering team you will build and manage systems that provide dynamic content management for many of Disney Entertainment’s brands including ABC Entertainment, ABC News, ABC OTV, Disney, Marvel, National Geographic, and Studios. This group also owns content ingestion from many internal and 3rd party sources, publishing pipelines and complex image services, You will help set the tone for a fast paced, passionate squad charged with unlocking highly engaging interactive functionality at high scale.
You will apply your proven engineering chops to help contribute to the design, development, test and deployment of first-rate, innovative software solutions. You will drive projects end-to-end: designing the initial solution; finding alignment with partner teams; execution of the necessary code; and overseeing the deployment of code to production. Members of the team look to your code and documentation as examples of excellence. You value good-faith collaboration, driving best practices, and promoting excellence on your team. You will also contribute to a high level of operational excellence for systems underpinning applications used by millions of Disney Entertainment fans every day.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
- Contribute to the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of core software in a cloud environment.
- Drive projects end-to-end: designing the initial solution; finding alignment with partner teams; execution of the necessary code; and overseeing the deployment of code to production.
- Lead and reinforce a high level of operational excellence for systems underpinning applications.
- Advocate engineering best practices, including the use of design patterns, code review, and automated unit/functional testing.
- Handle architectural and design considerations to evolute the system, focusing on security, reliability, efficiency, and flexibility.
- Mentor engineers within your squad (and beyond!) to help them improve their technical ability and build their profile within and outside of the organization.
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
Basic Qualifications
- 7+ years of related experience crafting large-scale, highly available Java services utilizing various database and messaging technologies.
- Strong programming skills in Java and other object-oriented languages, and a strong grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, databases, etc.)
- Experience using source control systems and CI/CD pipelines.
- An ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Collaborate efficiently with product management, technical program management, operations, and other engineering teams.
- Strong communication skills and a desire to share your knowledge with team members and others at Disney.
- Proven track record of designing and driving consensus on backend architectures.
- Deep understanding of and experience using caching technologies.
- Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, databases, etc).
- Strong understanding of design patterns and principles.
- Experience with object-oriented programming patterns.
- Experience with functional programming patterns.
- Experience with AGILE/Scrum practices.
- Skilled at work breakdown and task estimation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on highly scalable, real-time software platforms
- Extensive experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or similar cloud service
- Experience implementing and optimizing complex cloud software installations and infrastructure
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience
