EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) office leads and coordinates the institute’s science education programmes and public engagement efforts. Our activities are aimed at European school science teachers, young learners of all backgrounds aged between 10 and 19 years, and diverse public audiences. SEPE also offers support and training to EMBL scientists who have an interest in public engagement. SEPE is part of EMBL‘s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT).
As part of EMBL’s science education and public engagement efforts, the Laboratory opened the permanent exhibition ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ on the Heidelberg campus in 2023. The interactive exhibition presents the life sciences in all their facets, with a focus on EMBL's research. To support our exhibition programme for the public and school, the Exhibition Team is looking to recruit a highly motivated and well-organised Programme Assistant to join us at the EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany. The Programme Assistant will be part of the Exhibition Team, support the Education and Exhibition Officer and report to the Exhibition Manager.
We are looking for a conscientious individual who brings energy and enthusiasm to this role. It is essential that you bring a genuine interest in engaging with our wide range of visitors and enjoy interacting with all age groups. The successful candidate will be well-organised, a self-starter, focused on delivery of the key tasks and with an ability to prioritise. You should possess excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team and be comfortable with the delivery of some unsupervised tasks.
Your role
• Supporting the delivery of exhibition tours and school workshops.
• Supporting the organisation of events as part of the exhibition programme.
• Supporting production and dissemination of digital and print communications and event marketing material.
• Liaising with schools from Germany and EMBL member states, including handling of enquiries in German and English.
• Taking responsibility for selected administrative tasks, including, but not limited to managing the event registration website, assisting with database management and metric tracking, supporting the preparation of presentations and reports.
You have
• Completed a university degree or equivalent vocational training
• At least 1 year professional experience in a role relevant to the position (e.g. in the field of public engagement or event management)
• Affinity for using digital communications and marketing tools
• Proven organisation and problem-solving skills
• Ability to successfully work in a small team whose success depends on highly integrated team work
• Effective communication skills and enjoy engaging with others
• A service-oriented, friendly nature and a can-do attitude
• Flexibility to support occasionally weekend events (such as outreach or exhibitions events
• Excellent command of written and spoken German and English
You may also have
• A scientific degree or interest in the life sciences
• Experience in working in a cultural organisation, the museum field or an academic or international environment
• Additional language skills
