Job Title: Laydown Yard Inventory Coordinator

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, At-Will

Department: Construction & OSP

Location: Onsite: Merced, CA. 

Location Status: Work will be primarily performed onsite in our office. Occasional travel to and work from other Race offices or other off-site locations may be required.

Summary:

The Laydown Yard Inventory Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the organization, tracking, and distribution of materials and equipment stored in the company’s laydown yard. This role ensures that construction and OSP project teams receive accurate, timely access to the resources needed to keep projects on schedule. The coordinator manages material inventory levels, maintains accurate records, supports procurement and logistics functions, and enforces safety and security protocols within the yard. Acting as a key link between field crews, project managers, and vendors, the Inventory Coordinator helps streamline operations, reduce waste, and optimize material flow to support efficient construction and fiber deployment activities.

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Eligibility for US Employment without sponsorship
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred
  • A valid driver's license, subject to successful verification through a DMV check, is mandatory 
  • Certification to operate a forklift required
  • 2–4 years of experience in inventory control, warehouse, logistics, or construction yard operations
  • Knowledge of construction materials, tools, and equipment (OSP/fiber or utility industry experience a plus)
  • Proficiency with inventory management systems or ERP software
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to read and interpret packing slips, material orders, and delivery tickets
  • Familiarity with shipping/receiving processes and vendor coordination
  • Understanding of safety practices, OSHA guidelines, and yard equipment handling
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with field crews, project managers, and vendors
  • Ability to lift, move, and organize materials in an outdoor environment in varying weather conditions
  • The ability to effectively communicate in English, including speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension, as necessary for effective job performance and workplace communication
  • Proficiency in Spanish Language desirable


Skills:

  • Proficient use of MS Office applications including Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; teleconferencing applications
  • Functional use of common office equipment, computers, and office software

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

 

Inventory Management

  • Perform regular inventory counts to ensure accurate material levels
  • Maintain and run ongoing inventory tracking systems to monitor usage and availability
  • Reconcile discrepancies between physical counts and system records
  • Keep track of all inventory movement, including receipts, issues, and returns

 

Material Distribution

  • Issue materials to contractors or vendors based on project needs and requests
  • Stage and prepare materials in advance to meet project schedules
  • Verify quantities and documentation for all outgoing and incoming materials

 

Yard & Equipment Operations

  • Operate forklifts and other equipment safely to move and stage materials
  • Maintain an organized laydown yard to optimize efficiency and accessibility
  • Ensure materials are stored properly to prevent damage or safety risks

 

Administrative & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of all inventory transactions, deliveries, and issues
  • Provide regular inventory reports to project managers and supervisors
  • Communicate shortages, overages, or special material needs in a timely manner

 

Vehicle Maintenance and Travel:

  • Maintains vehicle/equipment pre-op/post-op to be prepared to perform required duties
  • Maintains a clean driving record as defined by the current fleet insurance underwriter

 

Safety Awareness and Compliance:

  • Maintains awareness of potential hazards like uneven terrain, loose pets, or slippery walkways
  • Maintains a safe distance from aggressive or unrestrained animals
  • Maintains a safe distance from potential hazards in the work area, including loose pets, children, and other live obstacles
  • Observes hazards and reports any concerns or accidents to a supervisor or safety professional; participates in the investigation process as needed
  • Understands, completes, and signs off all pre-job safety planning tools at the start and end of the shift; completes all required safety-related paperwork
  • Understands and responds appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, fumes, odors, different colored warning tags, warning sirens)
  • Upholds a secure work environment by adhering to regulations, procedures, and company policies, ensuring safety standards are consistently maintained
  • Stays current with fiber optic technologies, industry standards, and safety regulations
