  • Location: Central Library
  • Hours: Full-time, 40 per week 
  • Schedule: May vary but will include a combination of day, evening, and/or weekend hours (including occasional Sundays) 
  • FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

 

The Manager, Central Adult Services, is responsible for the management of Adult Services at Central and its day-to-day operations. Communicates and responds to staff, patrons, building problems and concerns as they arise; participates in day-to-day functions including circulation and reference; practices and promotes customer service. The Manager is responsible to plan, direct and oversee the operations and fiscal health of the department. The Manager provides departmental leadership and direction in support of the organization’s goals through staffing, training, performance management and directing department workflow. The Manager is also responsible for planning and maintaining work systems, procedures and policies that enable optimal performance of employees, volunteers and other resources within the department.

 

A successful candidate will…

  • Have a Master's degree 
  • Have an Indiana Librarian Certification 2 – Branch or Department Head 
  • Have five to seven years of supervisory experience


 What does the job look like?

  • Interviews, hires, trains and evaluates employees for Central Adult Services; provides direction, coaching and leadership to supervisory staff; resolves personnel conflicts of Central Adult Services. Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate information to staff, listens to staff concerns and reports them to senior management as appropriate. 
  • Directs the plans for services and programs for the community; schedules, delivers and evaluates based on feedback from participants, changing demographics, customer needs and interests. Directs staff in creating and implementing Community Action Plans. 
  • Directs staff in maintenance of the collection. Recommends new materials, organizes displays to promote the collection, evaluates and discards damaged or lesser used titles. Uses Bibliocommons to promote the collection by writing comments and creating lists and blogs. Directs staff in creating Bibliocommons comments and lists. Works with CMSA to meet Central’s periodical and standing order budgets annually. 
  • Responsible for managing over 40 staff members including four Supervisors and four adult teams at Central, which include the Lifelong Learning Team, Workforce & Business Engagement Team, Community Engagement Team, and Digital Journey Team. 
  • Resolves customer service situations at Central; models and encourages staff to provide excellent customer service. Responds to patron requests from all of Marion County, especially in the areas of business and computer instruction. 
  • Monitors 6-story, 476,00 square foot building including parking garage for safety concerns; handles safety and security issues. Monitors patron behavior and informs patrons of library guidelines. As person-in-charge, determines if suspension of patron privileges is warranted and determines length of suspension. Coaches staff to deescalate problem situations. 
  • Directs staff to develop appropriate partnerships with neighborhood groups and maintains a library presence in the community through presentations, e-mail, social media and publicity. 
  • Provides information by searching or recommending print or electronic sources or titles, placing material requests, searching shelves, or by referral to other libraries or community sources. Instructs patrons in using online catalog, print and electronic sources to access information, and in using computers and equipment. 
  • Collects and analyzes data on library use, services, trends and community resources. Oversees department budget. 
  • Conducts Central Capital Assets and Arts inventory annually, which includes 575 items. 
  • Maintains and approves vacation requests for staff. Oversees schedules created by Supervisors. Creates long-range, vacation and weekly schedule templates for Central Adult Services staff annually. 
  • Arranges group tours at Central Library. 
  • Able to work the normally scheduled work time for this position. 
  • Able to cope with daily job-related stress.
