About the Department
This is a non-civil service announcement in the Mayor's Office. The Crime Prevention & Violence Reduction Director will provide strategic leadership in establishing and managing the Office of Violence Prevention and Reduction (OVPR). This role is pivotal in advancing community safety through data-informed strategies, aligning Metro departments, engaging stakeholders, and implementing evidence-based, community-informed programs to prevent and reduce violence across Nashville-Davidson County.
Mayoral staff (non-civil service) receive 15 days of Paid Time Off and 12 sick days annually.

Position Duties
Leadership and Policy Development
- Establish and lead the Office of Violence Prevention and Reduction (OVPR), developing a comprehensive strategy for violence prevention and reduction. Define clear, measurable goals for annual reductions in violent crime.
- Collaborate with the Office of Youth Safety to align programming across Metropolitan Government departments.
- Develop evidence-based responses to emerging safety challenges in collaboration with Metro departments, agencies, and community partners.
- Advise the Mayor and his senior team on a wide range of safety issues.
- Direct city-funded violence prevention and intervention initiatives, ensuring strategic alignment with key Metro departments and government agencies.
- Coordinate interdepartmental efforts to maximize impact and resource efficiency in violence prevention programs.
- Establish partnerships with nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and faith-based communities to enhance community safety efforts.
- Identify national experts and local stakeholders to support OVPR initiatives.
- Engage a local university to help design and evaluate programs and initiatives.
- Work with the Legislative Affairs and Civic & Community Engagement teams in the Mayor’s office to build consensus and support for safety initiatives, addressing neighborhood concerns effectively with Metro Council members and the community.
- Cultivate relationships with community-based organizations, faith leaders, and advocacy groups to ensure inclusivity and diverse community representation.
- Work closely with the Metro Public Health Department to strengthen data and reporting systems, expand technical assistance, and increase the frequency and intensity of key programs.
- Collaborate with national experts and local stakeholders to develop a comprehensive violence prevention and reduction plan. Define a clear theory of change and logic models for key pathways.
- Oversee the design and implementation of evidence-based community programs that promote safety and opportunity.
- Oversee the development of evidence-based community programs designed to promote safety and opportunity and support positive youth development.
- Develop performance metrics to monitor progress and measure the impact of OVPR initiatives.
- Use data-driven insights to refine strategies, improve program effectiveness, and report on outcomes transparently.
- Engage a local university as a research and evaluation partner to enhance data collection, analysis, and reporting capabilities.
- Identify and secure federal, state, private, and philanthropic funding to sustain and expand initiatives, working with the Mayor’s Office of Advancement and Strategic Partnerships.
- Collaborate with Metro departments to ensure equitable grant allocation processes for community organizations.
- Cultivate partnerships with private foundations and businesses to innovate programs and enhance resource development.
- Prioritize initiatives that address the unique needs of underserved and vulnerable populations in Nashville.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Education, Social Work, Criminology/Criminal Justice, Behavior Sciences, Public Health, or a related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in community safety, public health approaches to violence prevention, or community-based organizations (CBO), with demonstrated leadership experience in similar roles.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

- Master's Degree
- Proven track record in building and managing cross-sector partnerships and engaging diverse stakeholders
- Expertise in organizational development including strategic planning and program management/design/evaluation
- Demonstrated experience of evidence-based practices in violence prevention, including public health strategies, cognitive-behavioral theory based initiatives, group violence intervention, and street outreach
