Licensed Practical Nurse Relief (LPN)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed in the State of Missouri as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Must have an unrestricted and active Missouri LPN nursing license.
- CPR and first aid certification required.
- Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
- School nursing and hospital nursing experience desired.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Health Services Coordinator and Building Principal
JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each
District student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating
climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Perform appropriate first aid treatment efficiently and effectively
- Assess severity of illness and injuries and notify family of findings as indicated
- Monitor students appropriately who are referred for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-up care
- Assess illness and injury and determine need for 911 and efficiently handle situation with calm and expertise and notify Health Services Coordinator of such events
- Provides support to RN’s and works collaboratively as a team member
- Document the essential information regarding illness and injury
- Analyze cause of accident and plan intervention
- Ability to identify the communicable diseases common to school-age population, as well as staff members
- Adhere to board policies for North Kansas City Schools
- Adhere to Health Services Procedures
- Adhere to board policies, state laws, and Board of Nursing regulations regarding medication administration
- Medication administration is efficient and all safety measures maintained
- Conduct normal growth and development screenings to identify existing problems
- Utilize appropriate health counseling and guidance techniques, including the ability to follow through on referrals
- Apply sound decision-making process to school nursing practice
- Effectively utilize local, state, and national resources to meet identified needs in population served
- Work cooperatively with other health professionals in identifying and delivering needed services in a coordinated and comprehensive manner
- Describe the role and responsibility of a school nurse as a health professional in an educational setting
- Demonstrate organizational skills necessary to facilitate health care in a school through a working knowledge of school organization and administration
- Work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, Health Services Coordinator and the Director of Pupil Services
- Express a sound philosophy of ethical issues in nursing, education and medicine.
- Work within a framework of the Nursing Practice Act for implementation of laws and regulations pertaining to school health
- Relate policies and procedures to the health of the student
- Utilize county, state and federal laws and regulations related to school health when needed
- Obtain and record a comprehensive immunization history for students
- Identify symptoms of communicable diseases common to school-age population
- Follow established system of reporting appropriate information to local health unit
- Assume responsibility for compiling immunization report for compliance with state statutes
- Implement effective case-finding procedures
- Perform appropriate special health care procedures prescribed for student
- Assess the degree of significance of the health problem as it relates to the student’s educational success
- Implement procedures regarding medication, including education for student, family and staff. Notify Health Services Coordinator if a controlled medication is given, including, but not limited to, Diastat, Epi-pen and any narcotic pain medication. Any other medication as deemed appropriate by Health Services Coordinator
- Present health information to student in an organized manner, based on student’s level of comprehension
- Recognize health problems, disease or disability as early as possible
- Assess student and/or family for level of knowledge and understanding regarding health problems and provide resources as deemed necessary
- Collaborate with other health care providers and agencies outside the school system to ensure continuity of care
- Plan to continuously update and expand knowledge base, which is important to ensure individual competency
- Exercise judgment in seeking consultation, assume responsibility within the scope of ability and practice
- Demonstrate effective human relations and communication skills
- Ability to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job requirements
- Ability to maintain accurate records, including, but not limited to, utilization of district specified electronic health records system
- Adhere to safety practices per district protocols
- Utilize medical equipment in a school setting efficiently and safely
- Demonstrate flexibility and dependability working with others in a variety of circumstances
- Adhere to confidentiality regulations, including FERPA
- Ability to meet deadlines and schedules
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions
- Implement established health care plans for students with health problems for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements
- Maintain complete and accurate documentation of nursing care and activities
- Ability to work under limited supervision following standardized practices
- Other duties as required or assigned
CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: The individual who holds this position is regularly required to walk, hear and speak and must have close moderate and distance vision ability. This individual must be able to travel between district facilities. The position requires a moderate amount of travel and physical activity.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work calendar to be established by the Board of Education. Benefits according to Board policies.
FLSA: Non-exempt
RETIREMENT: Public School Retirement System (PSRS) and Public Education Employee Retirement System (PEERS) eligibility will be determined by the state of Missouri.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: Licensed as a Pracitical Nurse with the State of Missouri
CLEARANCES: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations utilizing the Performance Based {insert} Evaluation process.
