Salary or Pay Band: Pay Band 4, $27.803 to $32.537 (5 step range)

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY: 

The Cancer Registrar I is responsible for patient and case registration including tentative diagnosis and morphology, final diagnosis coding for skin and non-malignant cases, death match processes, analysis and correction of any quantitative and qualitative deficiencies and assembly of patient information.  The Cancer Registrar I reports to the Site Manager of Cancer Registry. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education:

  • Diploma in Health Information Management 

Experience:

  • Six (6) months of experience in cancer registry coding within the last three (3) years OR; 
  • If no such applicant found, One (1) year of experience as a Health Information Practitioner (HIP)

Memberships:

  • Active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) 

Skills:   

  • Demonstrated medical knowledge 
  • Competent in the use of a variety of software. 
  • Ability to operate all types of office equipment
  • Ability to interpret detailed information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Moderate judgment and problem solving skills are required to select the most appropriate action from a variety of alternatives 
  • Human relations skills required to exercise common courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in the exchange of information 
  • Accuracy of fine motor movements required for typing and sorting charts 
  • Ability to coordinate and periodically assume responsibility for work over others 
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuing professional development 
  • Maintain Confidentiality 
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
