About the Department

Performs as a Team Member under the direct supervision of a Fire Lieutenant. May perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic in response to reported medical emergencies. May respond to a wide variety of emergencies including but not limited to fire alarms, automobile crashes, smoke investigations, structure fires, wildland fires, hazardous conditions and rescues; and perform general firefighting and mitigation duties as directed. May respond to a wide variety of public service calls. May perform fire prevention inspections, pre-fire surveys, and conduct emergency medical and fire safety education programs. 

Position Duties

  • Perform routine maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, buildings and grounds.
  • Participate in emergency medical services training.
  • Participate in firefighting skills training.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide basic and advanced life support. 
  • Respond to emergency scenes including fires and hazardous conditions, and perform duties as necessary to mitigate the emergency. 
  • Actively promote and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Perform Fire and Life Safety Inspections.
  • Participate in public education programs.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Learn Emergency Medical Services techniques and follow Emergency Medical Services Protocols.
  • Operate and maintain emergency medical equipment.
  • Provide emergency medical care for injured patients
  • Learn and employ safe firefighting tactics.
  • Perform strenuous physical activity for extended periods of time.
  • Understand and follow written and oral communications.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
  • Read, write, and use fire department computer systems for reporting and training.
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with others in a group living environment.
  • Remain calm and operate effectively in emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid State Driver’s License. 
  • Must hold one of the following current certifications:
    1. National Registry EMT (NRENT) or Paramedic (NREMT-P)
    2. Oregon EMT or Paramedic Certification
    3. EMT Certification from another state that is eligible for reciprocity and recognized by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA);
    4. All newly hired EMT are required to obtain Oregon Paramedic Certification within two (2) years of their hire date. 
  • Ability to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT or equivalent). 
  • NFPA Firefighter 1 or equivalent, preferred but not required.
