Research and Technology Engineer 4 (Design/Analysis) Position Overview
Qarbon Aerospace Research and Technology group is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with deep expertise in aerostructures analysis and composite design to support the development of the innovative technology in composites at Qarbon. In this high-ownership role, you will lead all design and analysis activities of our thermoplastic aerostructures that utilize our patented Induction Welding and HELIOSTM ice protection system. Along with continuing to develop new technologies.
You will work closely with our cross-functional Research and Technology team to design unique thermoplastic structures while also understanding the needs of transitioning new processing technologies beyond TRL 5. This is an opportunity to design at the forefront of thermoplastic aerostructure designs.
What you’ll do:
- Design of thermoplastic aerostructures that incorporate Qarbon’s novel thermoplastic technologies.
- Design electro-mechanical mechanisms for our robotic induction welding process. Prototyping, testing, and iterating mechanism designs for improved functionality and reliability.
- Advise and direct junior engineers on tooling design.
- Perform structural, electrical, and thermal analysis calculations and preliminary FEA.
- Lead the development of simulation methods around Induction Welding and HELIOSTM ice protection system.
- Collaborate with suppliers and customers when external support is required.
- Interface and coordinate thermoplastic design considerations with outside customers and suppliers.
- Work under general direction but independently plan, develop, and analyze solutions utilizing our cross-functional team.
- Collaborate within the team to generate technical solutions to a wide range for complex problems.
- Work with peers, subcontractors, and vendors to develop solutions to meet customer requirements for manufactured structures.
- Support patent applications activities as needed.
- Contribute to research & technology strategic plans and technology road maps.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of innovation.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, or materials engineering.
- 7+ years of experience in composite aerospace design & analysis.
- Strong CAD skills (Catia V5)
- Catia Composite Design Workbench.
- Composite Ply Definition
- Composite analysis and optimization.
- Structural analysis utilizing hand calculations and finite element methods.
- A history of hard work, honesty, high standard of accountability, and teamwork

Preferred Qualifications:
- Composite aerostructures qualification/certification experience.
- ANSYS Multiphysics workbench experience.
- Experience in developing and validating simulation methods.
- Experience in icing protection systems.
- Experience with thermoplastic composites.
- Experience with composite manufacturing methods.
- Experience with AFP programming.
