Responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment, sourcing and ordering additional instrumentation,  maintaining the sterile processing areas to include working with service providers to coordinate PM and repairs of equipment, managing supply inventory to include setting and adjusting par levels, ordering and receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment including cleaning solutions for endoscopy, and working with the Supply Chain department regarding backorders and other supply related issues Primary staff member responsible for quality and safety related monitoring such as room temperatures and humidity, sterilization logs and testing, crash cart daily checks.

 

 Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  •     Follow established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, preparing and packaging, disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment
  •     Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility or health care organization as needed
  •     Adhere to standard precautions including use of personal protective equipment
  •     Follow safety procedures and manufacturers’ instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies and equipment
  •     Operate equipment used in the sterile processing areas safely and according to the manufacturers’ instructions for use
  •     Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas
  •     Inventory, receive, and restock materials used for supporting sterile processing services and perioperative services.
  •     Work closely with OR Director and Purchasing Director to: source supplies, manage cost, and adjust par levels, as well as managing backorders and discontinuation of items.
  •     Coordinate with Facilities and vendors to maintain the proper functioning of all equipment in Sterile Processing, Endo Reprocessing and the Sterilizer in OR. 
  •     Comply with organizational policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines
  •     Assist with developing and updating of sterile processing areas policies and procedures
  •     Orient all surgical staff in sterile processing policies and procedures
  •      Adherence to hand washing requirements, standard precautions, workflow patterns, sterility assurance biological monitoring and dress code, including wearing of personal protective equipment. 
  •     Selects and prepares packaging materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation. 
  •     Maintains accurate sterilization records. 
  •     Monitor and record/retain records of OR and Sterile Processing room temperatures and humidities and report to facilities when temperatures or humidity levels are outside regulatory parameters.
  •     Properly loads and unloads sterilization cart items. Verifies that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load.
  •     Collects, cleans, checks and distributes patient care equipment. 
  •     Inventories assigned supply areas for replenishment, rotates supplies and stocks surgical department.
  •     Stays current with all regulations and requirements for department quality assurance including The Joint Commission and OSHA. 
  •     Maintains current Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. 
  •     Obtains and Maintains certification in Sterile Processing. 
  •     Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
  •     Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties.  Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
  •      Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies.  Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.
  •      Attendance is an essential function of this position.  Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times;   Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
  •     Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
