Here is what you will be doing

The Privacy Specialist is responsible for assisting the Privacy Operations Officer in ensuring Ontario Health (OH) programs comply with privacy rules and regulations. As part of this role, the Privacy Specialist provides privacy advisory services, supports privacy operations, assists in developing and implementing the privacy program, and supports the Privacy Operations Officer as required.

Reporting to the Privacy Operations Officer, the Privacy Specialist will advise Ontario Health programs to support their compliance privacy rules and regulations. In this role, you will be part of a team that leads the development of a privacy program for some of the most exciting and transformative initiatives in Ontario.

Here is what you will need to be successful

  • Conduct research and support the updating of privacy policies and procedures to ensure OH is compliant with applicable privacy laws in Ontario as requested.

  • Support the analysis of legislative changes and conducting legislative change impact assessments.

  • May be required to conduct privacy impact assessments identifying and assessing potential or actual risks for small to medium complex initiatives.

  • Support investigating privacy incidents, privacy inquiries, and privacy requests of any kind.

  • Provide privacy advisory and support to business teams.

  • Lead and participate on project teams as the privacy subject matter expert.

  • Assess and Identify privacy requirements.

  • Develop strong relationships with various internal and external stakeholders to foster a culture of privacy.

  • Respond and provide advice and legislative interpretation for information and access requests, consent management requests, complaints, or inquiries, appeals and privacy issues under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, escalating complex inquiries to more senior privacy staff for assistance where appropriate

  • Support privacy program projects and activities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Privacy Office.

  • Support the development and delivery privacy training for Ontario Health.

  • Other duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in health care, health informatics, public or business administration or another relevant field is preferred or equivalent education/experience.

  • 1 year of relevant privacy experience.

  • Recognized privacy designation (CIPP/C) is preferred.

  • Recognized security certification or designation is an asset.

  • Experience conducting privacy impact assessments is an asset.

  • Direct operational level privacy experience preferably in a health sector, public sector and/or IT environment ais an asset.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of access and privacy requirements and practices, preferably related to the health and public sectors.

  • Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).

  • Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

  • Thorough understanding of “privacy-by-design” and best practices.

  • Experience with conducting and/or providing oversight for privacy impact assessments including developing privacy requirements, risk mitigation plans, corporate policies and developing and/or delivering training content.

  • Knowledge of technology architecture and infrastructure, digital health solutions and services, enterprise and corporate IT including information and cyber security preferred.

  • Working knowledge of digital health technologies and information security industry standards.

  • Excel in a fast-paced and project focused environment.

  • Exceptional analytic and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication.
