About Department 471 Commissioned Ships Propulsion Plant Mechanical Engineering

D471 supports commissioned submarines and training units in the Navy. We provide technical support to LOS ANGELES, SEAWOLF, OHIO, VIRGINIA Class submarines, Moored Training Ships, and the S8G Prototype. D471 is a part of the following programs within the Life Cycle Support (LCS) Directorate: Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY), Moored Training Ship Support Yard (MTSSY), and S8G Prototype Design Agent (S8G PDA).

 

Role Overview 

As a D471 Fluid System Engineer, you will provide technical support for steam plant fluid systems on OHIO, SEAWOLF and VIRGINIA Class commissioned submarines. You will also support fluid systems for Naval Nuclear Power Training Units, Moored Training Ships and the S8G Prototype.

 

This position requires resolution of a wide variety of technical challenges in a fast paced environment. Technical expertise and knowledge of propulsion plant fluid systems, Military and Federal specifications, welding, fasteners, materials, mechanical equipment, and general methods of manufacturing will be developed by frequently using these skills in performing technical evaluations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and resolve system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyard.
  • Perform system and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Perform engineering studies and calculations.
  • Resolve obsolescence issues and updated provisioning documents.
  • Develop ship alterations, maintain fluid system diagrams and construction drawings, and updated operating instructions.
  • Effectively communicate with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Naval shipyards, and equipment vendors.
  • Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including:
    • Overall technical quality
    • Working in a team environment
    • Maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines.
Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical, Marine, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 0-5 years related engineering experience in a professional setting
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) Secret clearance as a condition of employment.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Marine, Chemical, Aerospace or engineering.
  • U.S. Navy experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program is highly desirable.
  • Experience with steam plant design, operations, or testing is beneficial but not required.
Skills:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required to interface with customers.
  • Highly motivated and well organized.
  • Srong project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
