About Department 471 Commissioned Ships Propulsion Plant Mechanical Engineering

D471 supports commissioned submarines and training units in the Navy. We provide technical support to LOS ANGELES, SEAWOLF, OHIO, VIRGINIA Class submarines, Moored Training Ships, and the S8G Prototype. D471 is a part of the following programs within the Life Cycle Support (LCS) Directorate: Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY), Moored Training Ship Support Yard (MTSSY), and S8G Prototype Design Agent (S8G PDA).

 

Role Overview 

D471 Commissioned Ship Propulsion Plant Engineers support mission readiness of LOS ANGELES, OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA Class commissioned submarines by providing engineering technical support for modernization and maintenance of propulsion plant systems and components. Engineers also provide engineering support for Naval Nuclear Power Training Units, which include the Moored Training Ships and the S8G Prototype. This position requires resolution of a wide variety of technical challenges in a fast-paced environment. Technical expertise and knowledge of propulsion plant systems and components, Military and Federal specifications, welding, fasteners, materials, mechanical equipment, and general methods of manufacturing will be developed by frequently using these skills in performing technical evaluations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and resolve questions and problems from vendors and Naval Shipyards.
  • Perform analysis, cost/benefit analysis, engineering studies and calculations, and resolve obsolescence.
  • Develop and maintain provisioning documentation, technical manuals, and drawing revisions.
  • Interface with NAVSEA 08, NAVSEA 05, NNL, NAVSUP WSS, and Naval Shipyards.
  • Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including: Overall technical quality.
  • Working in a team environment, maintaining awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines.
Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical, Marine, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 10+ years related engineering experience in a professional setting.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) Secret clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Prior Naval nuclear operating experience or shipboard system engineering experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a leadership role.
  • Prior DOD experience.
Skills:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required to interface with NAVSEA 08, NNL and Naval Shipyards. 
  • Highly motivated and well organized with strong technical acumen, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
