The Role

Are you passionate about creating safe, healthy, and compliant workplaces? We’re looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Safety Coordinator to join our team. In this dynamic role, you’ll take the lead in developing, coordinating, and monitoring safety practices that protect our employees and ensure compliance with state, federal, and internal standards. Reporting to the Risk Manager, you’ll be a key driver in building a strong culture of safety, accountability, and regulatory excellence across the agency.

Position Duties

The Safety Coordinator will: 

  • Promote safety awareness by delivering a variety of employee safety programs based in state and federal laws and regulations; coordinate specialized training by third parties as necessary or appropriate; seek continuous improvement opportunities for the agency’s safety programs. 
  • Implement and manage the agency’s employee safety training program, providing education and skill assessment and refreshers across the employee lifecycle. 
  • Perform compliance audits of agency facilities/worksites, equipment, and procedures; advise managers and employees on safe work practices and relevant state and federal laws and regulations. 
  • Maintain, review, and update the agency’s safety and accident prevention policies and procedures, including the required Accident Prevention Program (APP).
  • Review and investigate employee injuries, accidents, and claims, and present findings to the Risk Manager, Human Resources personnel, and supervisors; provide “lessons learned” guidance and recommendations to supervisors and employees. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of worker safety and loss prevention rules and regulations; attend continuing education and skills training, including a program of refreshers on key workplace safety topics and practices. 
  • Monitor agency departments for compliance with required chemical and material handling practices; manage the agency’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) platform in collaboration with supervisors and employees; work with managers to standardize chemical purchases and application practices, reducing or eliminating the use of the most hazardous products, wherever possible; perform periodic audits of chemical inventories to ensure that they are appropriately maintained; provide appropriate education and training  to staff. 
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and advisor to the agency’s Safety Committee, working closely with elected committee leaders; support regular safety meetings at property and other worksites.
  • Work closely with staff responsible for overseeing the agency’s emergency preparedness and security functions to ensure alignment and integration with essential workplace safety practices, including education and training. 
  • Provide Risk Management, Human Resources, Property Management, and other departmental leaders with regular reporting on workplace accidents and injuries, including relevant data, and maintain a continuous improvement plan for hazard mitigation and reduction. 
  • Serve as the agency liaison to the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries/Department of Safety & Health. 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree AND
  • Considerable experience in the development and administration of safety programs and accident prevention OR
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrable expertise in:
    • Occupational safety and health principles and practices, including workers’ compensation processes.
    • Regulations and standards of the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries / Division of Occupational Safety & Health (L&I/DOSH) and the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Thorough knowledge of:
    • Industry loss control procedures, including liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance.
    • Scientific and technical information related to chemical and power tool safety, and hazardous substances such as lead-based paint, asbestos, and drug-contaminated housing units.
    • Procedures for responding to L&I citations and investigations, addressing employee safety complaints and concerns, and completing job hazard analyses for property management and maintenance staff.
    • Recordkeeping procedures for employee injury investigations, auditing and monitoring of compliance, safety inspections, and education and training. 
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with leaders, stakeholders, colleagues, regulators, and inspectors.
    • Design and deliver education programs that meet diverse learner needs, reflect multiple learning styles, and integrate equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles.
    • Collect and analyze data, define problems, draw valid conclusions, and propose creative, practical solutions for programs, processes, and policies.
    • Collaborate with diverse leaders and employees, enforcing policies and procedures with tact, professionalism, and confidentiality.
    • Use Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and other databases/training platforms effectively.
    • Work independently in a fast-paced environment while engaging successfully with a diverse workforce, including second-language speakers.
Special Requirements:
  • Valid Occupational Safety and Health Administration/Department of Labor 30-hour training certificate within 6-months of hire.
  • Consent to and pass a driver's and criminal records background check.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license to travel between work sites as required. Must have an acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Salary & Benefits:

The starting salary range for this position is $82,417.73 - $100,961 annually, dependent on qualifications and professional experience. The complete salary range for this position is $82,417.73 - $119,505.16 annually. Performance-based merit increase opportunities and Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) are reviewed annually.
