This Opportunity
We are seeking an Environmental Technician to join our team in Buxton Beach, North Carolina! In this hands-on role, you will you will play a vital role in executing a wide range critical fieldwork, including cleanup and remediation efforts. This is a temporary role with work expected to last for the duration of the project.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Effectively perform a variety of industrial service and emergency response projects, including General housekeeping, small equipment operation, power washing, decontamination and maintenance.
- Provide field support for the rapid response and cleanup of hazardous and non-hazardous material releases.
- Conduct sampling and monitoring of hazardous and non-hazardous materials and wastes.
- Conduct confined space entry in accordance with confined space permits, if trained.
- Identify and appropriately package hazardous and non-hazardous wastes for transportation and disposal.
- Properly don PPE up to and including level A PPE, perform industrial services, doff PPE, conduct decontamination, and properly dispose of contaminated PPE.
- Use environmental and safety monitoring equipment including 4 gas meters, lumex, draeger tubes, etc.
- Conduct soil, groundwater and vapor sampling for laboratory analysis.
- Prepare daily diaries, reports, field sketches, post-incident closure reports of all project activity to ensure records are accurate and complete.
- Effectively communicate observations or concerns regarding health, safety, or work environment conditions to internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing, maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor to ensure clear understanding and appropriate action.
- Assist with various duties within the work site including regular equipment checks, maintenance, and inventory; instrument calibration, facility maintenance, facility organization, snow removal, and other duties as assigned.
- Deploy boom from spill response watercraft for oil spill containment.
- Conduct oil spill response tasks including use of sorbent pads, pom poms, granulated absorbent material;
- Participate in Tailgate Safety Meetings, review the Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP) that summarizes the hazards of the proposed work, and follow appropriate PPE and other safety procedures.
- Provide field support for Industrial Services and Environmental projects as assigned andavailable.
- Provide support to the waste transport and disposal (T&D) team for both emergency response (ER) projects and regular waste T&D services. Efficiently organize waste disposal operations in collaboration with internal and external clients to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Properly maintain and train with ER and Oil Spill Removal Organization (OSRO) equipment so that equipment is properly used and in working condition.
- Communicate with Project Managers to improve site execution
- Work weeks may include work on a Saturday or Sunday.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED or 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record, required
- Possess fundamental knowledge of operating hand and power tools and understanding equipment mechanics
- Basic knowledge of small engines, pumps, and blowers is a plus
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Possess or have access to reliable means of transportation on a 24-hour basis
Physical Requirements
- Ability to function in work environments that sometimes include high heat; high humidity; extreme cold; roadway traffic hazards; on water (boat operations) and confined spaces.
- Occasional work wearing a respirator; infrequent work requiring supplied air, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and fully encapsulated protective suits.
- Adequate vision and hearing to safely see teammates hand signals and hear warning communication in low light.
- Substantial repetitive movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching, grasping, twisting, pushing, and pulling).
- Walking on uneven surfaces & climbing stairs/ladders.
- Semi-frequent crouching, bending, stooping and twisting, occasionally in tight spaces.
- Sitting in a vehicle for up to three hours straight.
- Working while standing during a 12-hour workday.
- Frequently lifting up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period.
- Occasionally lifting 3-6” diameter hoses that weigh approximately 20 pounds over the head onto hose racks.
- Managing a 55-gallon drum containing approximately 400 pounds of material onto a drum dolly, then moving the drum using the dolly.
