Purpose of the Position:
Win, the largest provider of family shelter and supportive housing in New York City, is committed to transforming the lives of homeless families and their children. Our mission is to provide safe housing, critical services, and innovative programs to help families regain independence and ensure a brighter future for their children.
The Public Policy and Strategy Department at Win is seeking a dedicated Graduate Policy Intern to support our ongoing policy research and advocacy efforts. The intern will work closely with our dynamic team to contribute to systemic reforms that address the root causes of homelessness and improve services for families facing housing instability. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in policy analysis, advocacy, and campaign development in a fast-paced and impactful environment.
The internship:
You will report to the AVP of Policy and Advocacy. This internship pays $20/hour for up to 10-15 hours of work per week. Day-to-day work can be done in our office in lower Manhattan or a combination of remote/in-office.
Responsibilities:
- Advocacy Campaign Support: Assist in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns targeting key policymakers, informed by the experiences of Win residents.
- Emerging Issues Identification: Collaborate with Win residents and staff to identify and document new challenges faced by homeless service providers and those experiencing homelessness.
- Policy Briefs & Papers: Assist in creating and refining policy briefs, research papers, and presentations by providing content, proofreading, and verifying research.
- Literature Reviews: Conduct thorough literature reviews to ensure that Win’s policy positions are evidence-based and data-informed.
- Data Collaboration: Work with the Research Team to integrate Win data into advocacy strategies.
- Information Monitoring: Track media, mailing lists, and publications to keep the policy team informed of relevant developments in policy, research, and politics.
- Resource Library Maintenance: Help build and maintain a comprehensive library of key research and create monthly newsletters highlighting new findings.
- Advocacy Coalition Participation: Represent Win in advocacy coalitions by attending meetings and contributing to discussions.
- Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support to the policy team as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to travel to Win sites, meetings, and trainings throughout New York City.
- Capable of sitting at a computer for extended periods.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing a graduate degree, preferably in public policy, social work, urban studies, or a related field.
- Familiarity with policy issues impacting families experiencing homelessness.
- Strong writing, communication, and research skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and online communication tools.
- Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
