Position: High School Boys Varsity Head Basketball Coach
Location: Garfield Heights High School

Job Description:
Garfield Heights City Schools is seeking an experienced and inspiring Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach to lead our high school program. The Head Coach will serve as a mentor and role model, fostering athletic excellence, academic accountability, teamwork, and personal development for student-athletes. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, coaching expertise, and a commitment to upholding all Garfield Heights City Schools policies while promoting sportsmanship, discipline, and integrity on and off the court.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Mentorship: Provide direction, guidance, and mentorship to student-athletes while promoting character development, teamwork, and respect.
Program Development: Plan, organize, and implement a comprehensive boys’ basketball program that supports skill development, competitive success, and long-term growth of players.
Compliance & Eligibility: Ensure all players meet academic and eligibility requirements in accordance with OHSAA and Garfield Heights City Schools policies.
Practice & Game Preparation: Design and execute structured practice plans, develop game strategies, and make in-game decisions to maximize team performance.
Staff Supervision: Recruit, train, and supervise assistant coaches to support program goals and ensure continuity across all levels of boys’ basketball.
Safety & Conduct: Promote a safe, positive, and inclusive environment during all practices, games, travel, and team activities.
Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with students, families, school staff, alumni, and the community to generate support for the basketball program.
Athletic Development: Collaborate with the athletic department on strength and conditioning programs to enhance athletic performance and reduce injury risks.
Program Operations: Manage scheduling, team communications, and coordination of equipment and uniforms.
Professional Growth: Stay current with coaching strategies, OHSAA regulations, and best practices in basketball coaching and youth development.
Other Duties: Perform other related responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration.
Qualifications:
Valid Pupil Activity Permit with the Ohio Department of Education
Satisfactory BCI/FBI background checks
Prior high school or collegiate coaching experience preferred (minimum 3–5 years strongly encouraged)
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, and player development
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, families, and staff
Demonstrated commitment to academic success, sportsmanship, and student well-being
