Position: High School Boys Assistant Basketball Coach
Location: Garfield Heights High School
Position Type: Part Time, Stipend
Job Description:
Garfield Heights City Schools is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Boys Basketball Coach to support the high school varsity program. The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Head Coach to develop players’ skills, instill strong values of teamwork and sportsmanship, and contribute to the overall success of the basketball program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, communication skills, and a commitment to fostering both athletic and academic growth in student-athletes.
Key Responsibilities:
Support Program Leadership: Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and implementing practices, workouts, and game strategies.
Skill Development: Work directly with players to improve fundamentals, game knowledge, and individual performance.
Mentorship & Role Modeling: Promote academic accountability, discipline, teamwork, and positive character development among student-athletes.
Compliance: Ensure student-athlete eligibility and adherence to OHSAA and Garfield Heights City Schools policies.
Game Preparation: Help prepare scouting reports, in-game adjustments, and bench management to maximize team performance.
Player Supervision: Provide supervision at all practices, games, travel, and team activities to ensure safety and accountability.
Program Support: Assist with program operations such as scheduling, equipment, communication, and coordination with parents and stakeholders.
Collaboration: Work effectively with the Head Coach, other assistant coaches, athletic staff, and administration to ensure continuity across the basketball program.
Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships with families, alumni, and the community to build support for the program.
Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or school administration.
Qualifications:
Valid Pupil Activity Permit with the Ohio Department of Education
Satisfactory BCI/FBI background checks
Prior coaching or playing experience in basketball (high school or higher preferred)
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals and ability to teach skill development
Effective communication and collaboration skills
Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete growth, academic achievement, and well-being
