About the Department
Under supervision, learns to perform and performs a wide variety of clerical and paraprofessional library support services related to collection maintenance, patron assistance, circulation, youth services, and customer service duties; performs related duties as assigned; and makes sure that materials in our library are accessible and inviting to our patrons by accurately shelving, sorting, and tidying our collection of books, magazines, DVDs, and other materials. The ideal candidate is organized, enthusiastic about libraries and reading, and works well with others.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Library Assistant I is the entry level classification in which incumbents perform the more routine library service functions, including circulation duties, preparation of materials, weeding, and shelf-reading materials. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn to perform functions within established guidelines.
Supervision Received/Exercised:
Receives ongoing support and guidance from a Library Associate, a Librarian I/II, or a Senior Librarian; the direct supervisor is the Deputy Director of Community Services for the Library.
Position Duties
Example of Duties
Organizing recently returned materials to be re-shelved;
Re-shelving items in alpha-numeric order and/or according to the Dewey Decimal system; Shifting and straightening shelved items on an ongoing basis;
Offering friendly customer service to people of all ages, including children and teens;
Other duties may be assigned as necessary, in keeping with the general nature of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
This position requires some high school education and the ability to file items in alphabetical and numeric order; Some experience in a clerical, stocking, or customer-service related position is preferred.
License/Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (The following are a representative sample of the KSA’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position.)
Attention to detail and accuracy;
Successful completion of an on-site shelving exercise;
Basic computer skills, including email and Microsoft Office;
Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal courteously with the public and to participate as a member of a team.

Supplemental Information:
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The position requires the need to lift, drag and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
