Position Summary
The Director of Transportation is responsible for leading and improving the company’s transportation network across two primary areas: farm operations (live haul, hatchery, feed haul) and finished goods operations (delivery, garage, fleet management). While candidates may bring deeper expertise in one of these areas, the role requires experience and leadership capability across both. This position ensures safety, service, performance, and cost efficiency while advancing best practices and continuous improvement throughout the supply chain.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Leadership
- Develop and execute long-term strategies for transportation efficiency, safety, and cost effectiveness
- Build and analyze models, forecasts, and performance reports to identify improvement opportunities
- Establish and monitor KPIs that ensure operational excellence
- Serve as a strategic partner to Sales, Production, Customer Service, Scheduling, and Supply Chain
- Prepare and manage annual budgets, identifying opportunities to reduce costs without compromising service
- Foster a culture of engagement, inclusivity, and professional growth through succession planning and coaching
Farm Functions Scope (Live Haul, Hatchery & Feed Haul)
- Oversee transportation of live animals, chicks, hatching eggs, and feed to production facilities
- Ensure compliance with animal welfare and humane handling standards
- Manage scheduling, routing, and execution to maximize efficiency and safety
- Lead planning and forecasting efforts for high-volume farm-related operations
Finished Goods Scope (Finished Goods, Garage & Fleet)
- Direct delivery of finished goods to distributors, retailers, processors, and freezers
- Oversee garage operations and fleet maintenance to ensure asset reliability and uptime
- Implement best practices for fleet lifecycle management, cost control, and safety
- Coordinate shuttle and jockey operations to support plant and warehouse activities
Compliance, Safety & Performance
- Ensure adherence to all Department of Transportation and other regulatory requirements
- Promote a culture of safety and drive continuous reduction in accidents and injuries
- Monitor industry compensation benchmarks to maintain competitive wage structures
- Continuously improve efficiency, cost savings, and service quality
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 7–10 years in logistics, transportation, or supply chain leadership
- Experience with refrigerated and/or live animal transportation required
- Proven success in leading high-volume operations (100+ truckloads per week)
- Class A CDL preferred
Qualifications
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills in modeling, forecasting, and performance reporting
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and ERP/transportation management systems
- Demonstrated leadership experience with coaching, team development, and performance management
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; effective presenter and negotiator
- Highly organized with strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
