As part of Transport for NSW’s transformative agenda, the Transport Asset Manager (TAM) has been established to enhance the safety and reliability of the state's heavy rail assets, facilitating long-term investment in rail infrastructure, while also allowing for efficient operations and asset surety.

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Lead Specialist to lead the strategic management of Heavy Rail Control Systems.

 

In this critical role, you will take ownership of the control systems, data, and communications asset class within our transport network, working collaboratively across the organisation and with Treasury to develop, maintain, and continually improve asset management and investment plans.

 

Your expertise will ensure that our heavy rail control systems operate safely, reliably, and sustainably, while meeting all relevant compliance and environmental standards.

 



Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Asset Register for control systems, data, and communications assets to enable informed decision-making and risk management.
  • Prepare evidence-based business cases, reports, and recommendations by analysing asset data, assessing risks, and engaging stakeholders to support asset management decisions.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop an integrated investment plan aligning with long-term infrastructure strategies and funding requirements.
  • Lead the creation and continuous improvement of Strategic Asset and Services Plans (TAM SASP and TAM ASP) to support operational safety, reliability, and sustainability.
  • Provide technical assurance on asset performance, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, maintenance, and operational standards.
  • Identify innovative asset improvement opportunities, including new technologies, asset upgrades, renewals, and divestments that align with digital transformation and operational goals.
  • Act as the asset owner in governance processes relating to acquisition, sustainment, renewal, and divestment activities, providing strategic advice and final approvals.
  • Lead cross-functional engagement to successfully integrate new technologies and digital systems, maintaining real-time control, safety, and network coordination capabilities.

 



Key Challenges:

  • Establish and enhance collaborative ways of working across Transport for NSW’s asset portfolio.
  • Manage the evolving technological landscape in control systems and communications, balancing innovation with system reliability and regulatory compliance.
  • Navigate the complexities of digital transformation while managing cybersecurity risks and legacy system maintenance during transition phases.

About you

  • Proven experience in asset management within heavy rail control systems or similar infrastructure environments.
  • Strong strategic mindset with the ability to translate complex technical information into actionable plans.
  • Experience in governance, risk management, and compliance within transport or related sectors.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and collaboration skills, with experience working across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to lead change and innovation while managing operational continuity and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with ETCS, CBTC, and other advanced train control systems.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks applicable to rail control systems.
