About the Department

This position is for a full-time, 12-month, unclassified, staff position.
This is a grant funded position.

Position Duties

  • Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a shop, skilled trades, welding, or advanced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, welding, machining, and fabrication.
  • Previous experience supporting instructional or workforce training environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with LEAN, 5S, or similar continuous improvement systems strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and communicate effectively with students, staff, and industry.
  • Supervisory experience preferred; must be comfortable training and overseeing others in shop settings.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other industrial equipment in a training or shop environment is required.
  • Must be comfortable operating large trailer vehicles, including loading, unloading, and securing equipment such as forklifts and other industrial tools; experience balancing loads and transporting heavy equipment safely is essential. Class A CDL preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with inventory or facilities software a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with students, faculty and staff and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear and handle or feel objects and controls.
  • Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Must have the sensory ability to safely operate machinery and interact with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 75 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

The Shop Manager for Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Training plays a critical role in maintaining and operating the hands-on instructional spaces within the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology (CAMET) at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC). This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of shop and lab spaces in Building L, including oversight of tools, equipment, inventory, ordering, and receiving. The Shop Manager supports faculty in workforce-aligned training, maintains a safe and efficient environment, and ensures all instructional spaces are fully stocked and operational. In addition to shop oversight, the manager assists with instructional activities, supports workforce training delivery (on-campus and off-site), and collaborates with industry and academic partners to promote student success in high-demand skilled trades programs.

Other Qualifications

Shop & Lab Oversight

  • Manage daily operations of advanced manufacturing and skilled trades lab/shop spaces with the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient shop environment aligned with LEAN, 5S, and visual management principles.
  • Conduct regular safety audits; perform or coordinate preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and hazard mitigation.
  • Track, organize, and maintain inventories of tools, equipment, and consumable supplies.
  • Submit and track purchase requests and work orders using institutional systems.

Instructional Support

  • Provide introductory safety and equipment usage training for students and assist instructors during lab sessions.
  • Deliver lab-based instruction for short-term training modules or workforce programs as needed.
  • Prepare shop environments for instruction, including setup and breakdown of materials and equipment.
  • Support faculty and staff with tool/equipment readiness to ensure seamless delivery of technical education.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Maintain, inspect, and ensure safe operation of all shop equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Coordinate vendor or contractor work related to equipment repair or facility enhancements.
  • Safely operate and maintain forklift, crane, scissor lift, and other industrial tools and equipment.

Workforce & Training Logistics

  • Transport training equipment to satellite campuses, correctional facilities, or off-site employer and/or community training locations as needed.
  • Provide logistical support for mobile training events, including loadout, delivery, and setup.
  • Supervise lab assistants, student workers, and volunteers engaged in shop or training support roles.

Administrative & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate logs and records for inventory, safety inspections, tool checkouts, and program supplies.
  • Collaborate with academic leadership and grant managers to ensure shop operations align with grant-funded objectives.
  • Participate in program improvement activities, planning meetings, and relevant professional development.

Other Duties

  • Serve as a technical advisor in purchasing and shop layout planning.
  • Assist with campus events, building tours, recruiting events, advisory board demonstrations, or industry partner visits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Dean.
