Operates various types of heavy equipment engaged in the construction, repair, or maintenance of county roads and bridges; assists Foreman in supervising Equipment Operators; and transports materials to and from work sites.

Position Duties

  • Operates heavy equipment such as finish blade, asphalt truck, motor grader, and other equipment used in the construction and repair of county roads and bridges.
  • Performs work with hand tools, including digging trenches, filling excavations, mixing concrete, cutting down trees and brush, and removing driftwood and debris from culverts.
  • Performs welding duties, including welding parts together and repairing broken or cracked parts.
  • Drives tractor-trailer truck, dump truck, water truck, oil truck, pickup truck, or other trucks for hauling materials to construction or repair sites.
  • Operates roller or other heavy equipment as required when paving roads.
  • Operates front-end loader or track loader to load/unload materials and equipment.
  • Performs tasks associated with bridge construction repair.
  • Operates other heavy and light equipment, including recycler, rough dozer, rotary broom, tractor shredder, chip spreader, rough carpenter, dump truck, and other equipment used in the construction and repair of county roads and bridges.
  • Assists in road base preparation and subgrading tasks prior to paving.
  • Assists with clearing of brush, traffic control, and cleaning of drainage ditches.
  • Demonstrates equipment operation techniques to Equipment Operators.
  • Assists with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling dirt, asphalt, or other materials during pothole repair, reconstruction of road shoulders, and crack sealing.
  • And still perform the duties of Equipment Operator I, II, III
  • Attends. monthly safety meetings for Road Department.
  • Turns in daily employee time sheets.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. High school graduation or its equivalent, plus at least six years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
 
CDL driver's license and tanker combination license.

Other Qualifications

Safe operation of the equipment used in road construction and maintenance; provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of such motorized equipment; and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
 
Analyze and evaluate overall safety of equipment and personnel relating to road construction and maintenance; write reports, letters, and memos; read manuals, letters, and memos; operate equipment used in road construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; assist others in properly operating equipment; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers; and maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.
