University of Maryland, Baltimore is currently seeking a Contractual Laboratory Research Specialist to join the School of Medicine, Department of Cardiac Surgery. The selected candidate will participate in multidisciplinary research projects involving cardiovascular physiology, molecular biology and bioengineering. The research in the lab focuses on applied cardiovascular disease, artificial organ development and biological responses. The research team consists of surgeons, cardiologists, engineers, biological scientists, residents and students. The incumbent will function as a key scientist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research projects.
This position will not involve any direct patient interaction or provide direct clinical care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs independent projects related to biological responses of human and animals to use of artificial organs, including literature survey, experimental design, protocol development, lab-testing. The biological responses include blood biocompatibility (platelet activation, complement system activation, hematological alteration), tissue remodeling (structure change, molecular alteration, protein expression, gene regulation, etc).
- Administers day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies.
- Conducts library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
- Contributes to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research findings.
- Performs routine and advanced laboratory research activities such as: preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, recombinant DNA techniques, oxidation and transport assays using radiolabeled compounds, protein purification, etc.
- Prepare manuscripts, scientific illustrations, journal articles and grant proposals.
- Reviews, writes and edits reports such as evaluation plans, test results, technical manuals, etc. to provide recommendations, conclusions, and other data.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry or related fields. Master's preferred.
Experience: Three years of experience in laboratory research environment, experience related to molecular biology or biochemistry preferred.
Other: Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of cardiovascular research, immunology, physiology and biology
- Hands-on” experience with techniques, instruments and devices routinely used in biology research.
- Detail oriented and well organized.
- Ability to work as a team member.
Hiring Range: $64,000 - $71,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
