About Motorway
Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace – our award winning, online-only platform connects private car sellers with over 7,500 verified dealers nationwide, who compete to offer the best price. Founded in 2017, our technology makes the process refreshingly easy, earning us an 'Excellent' Trustpilot rating with over 70,000 reviews. We're not just building a platform; we're changing how people sell cars.
Backed by leading investors like Index Ventures and ICONIQ Growth, and following a successful $190 million funding round, we're on a mission to transform the used car market.
The Role
The Platform Engineering team is a force multiplier for our entire engineering organisation. By providing a world-class internal developer platform, we directly accelerate Motorway's ability to innovate and ship products faster than our competition.
We are looking for a Platform Engineering Manager to lead this team, turning our platform vision into a reality that drives business velocity. You will be responsible for leading the team that builds and runs the core infrastructure and tooling that enables our engineers to deliver value to our customers, quickly and reliably.
What you'll do:
Drive Business Velocity: You will own the execution of the platform roadmap, focusing on initiatives that directly improve key business metrics like deployment frequency, lead time for changes, and service reliability. Your primary goal is to make it faster and safer for our product teams to ship code and deliver value to our customers.
Maximise Engineering Efficiency: Treat our platform as a product with our engineers as your customers. By reducing their cognitive load and providing seamless "golden paths" to production, you will unlock their productivity and creativity, allowing them to focus on building innovative features that grow our business.
Strengthen Product Reliability: You will be responsible for the core infrastructure that underpins the Motorway customer experience. You'll lead your team to build a platform that is not just scalable and reliable, but also cost-effective, directly contributing to product stability and healthy gross margins.
Lead a High-Performing Team: Mentor and grow a team of platform engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You will be responsible for their career growth and for creating a thriving, inclusive environment.
Who you are:
You have experience leading a Platform, DevOps, SRE, or similar infrastructure-focused engineering team, with a track record of delivering tangible outcomes.
You are passionate about the developer experience as a key driver of business success.
You have a strong understanding of modern cloud infrastructure (we use AWS), containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code principles.
You think of "everything as a product," applying product management principles to the internal platform you are building to serve your engineering customers.
You are an excellent communicator and a servant leader, dedicated to empowering both your team and the wider engineering organisation.
You are comfortable working in a role where you contribute to a larger strategy and will be supported in delivering ambitious goals.
Benefits:
Stock Options: Share in Motorway's growth and future success.
BUPA Health Insurance: Comprehensive health insurance, which now covers pre-existing conditions. We also offer discounted dental and gym memberships.
Hybrid & Flexible Working: Many of our roles include flexibility to work from home.
Work from abroad: Work from any European timezone for 1 month per year.
Pension: We offer a workplace pension scheme with NEST.
EV Scheme & Cycle to Work: Lease a brand new electric car or purchase a bicycle through salary sacrifice.
A great team: Our friendly team meets up regularly for lunches and after-work drinks, plus we hold larger events at least twice a year.
