Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL applications for the part-time, job share term position of Teen Specialist located at Keshen Goodman Public Library. 

This is a unionized position. Preference will be given to internal applicants from the NSUPE Local 14 bargaining unit.

ABOUT THE BRANCH
Keshen Goodman Public Library is a bustling center of activity serving a culturally diverse community in the Clayton Park area. The branch boasts a cozy cafe, welcoming outdoor spaces, a dedicated area for kids and a variety of technology resources. You'll find people connecting with friends, online or in person in languages from all across the globe. The high energy of Keshen Goodman Library always makes for a lively experience.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teen Specialists work with and on behalf of teens and preteens in their communities, introducing them to services in the library and in the community. They are responsible for planning, coordinating and providing teen and preteen programs and events. They focus on relationship-building with teens, including youth at risk, and support youth development. Teen Specialists stay current with teen interests in literature, culture, media and technology, and incorporate them in teen and preteen library services. Specialists are part of the leadership team for their district, working with Leads and Managers to achieve service excellence.

As a Teen Specialist, you will:
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate teen programs and events – for the branch, district, and/or region
  • Facilitate diverse social, recreational and learning experiences for teens
  • Work to actively engage teens in the library in formal and informal ways
  • Build relationships and maintain community partnerships
  • Participate in hiring public service staff 
  • Train and support staff in teen programming and service approaches
  • Assist with the supervision of volunteers
  • Provide guidance to Services Advisors and other staff in the area of specialization
  • Support regional projects and initiatives; participates on regional teams
  • Act as a resource in the area of teen services
  • Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es)
  • Provide customer service
  • Display, promote, and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and display safety awareness at all times.
  • Support and show leadership by working to health and safety standards, follow health and safety policies and procedures and encourage colleagues to work to the same standards by reporting incidents, hazardous conditions and improvement possibilities.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Education and Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree & two (2) years of related experience
OR 
  • Two (2) years of Post-Secondary & four (4) years of related experience
OR 
  • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent & six (6) years of related experience

Required:
  • Read and write English
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills 
  • Customer Service skills
  • Public speaking and presenting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training 
  • Experience in program planning and delivery for teens
  • Knowledge of media and resources of interest to teens
  • Experience working with diverse communities 
  • Knowledge of best practices in Information and Readers’ Advisory services or Information and Referral services
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills, including:
    • Functions of a web browser
    • Microsoft Office applications 
    • Social media applications
  • Intermediate technology skills including:
    • Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologies
    • Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts

Assets:
  • Knowledge of related groups, organizations and services
  • Fluency in a second language 
  • Facilitation skills
  • Previous experience in volunteer management 

TRAVEL
  • The position requires occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

$31.24 - $35.52
