Location:  Flexible (San Mateo, CA). This role requires proximity to the office location for periodic meetings and lab work, but with flexibility to work remotely with manager approval.

 

The Role

GoPro is seeking a Director of Electrical Engineering to lead the development of next-generation camera hardware. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of GoPro’s iconic products through innovation, strategic component validation, and cross-functional collaboration. You will manage a local, multi-disciplinary electronics design team and work closely with our JDM partners in Asia to deliver cutting-edge cameras and camera-embedded devices.

What You Will Do

  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Lead and mentor a high-performing electrical engineering team focused on camera hardware development including specialty disciplines such as RF and battery engineering.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
    • Collaborate with global teams, including JDM partners in China, to ensure seamless execution and alignment.
  • Product Development & Innovation
    • Drive early validation efforts and innovation strategies that feed into and shape the product roadmap.
    • Oversee the design and development of camera circuits, RF systems, display technologies, and power management.
    • Guide cross-functional teams through development challenges and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Technology Strategy
    • Define and suggest technology roadmaps for key components such as batteries, charge chips, displays, and sensors.
    • Evaluate and validate new technologies and components to ensure feasibility and scalability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with Firmware, Architecture, Optical, Thermal, Acoustics, and Mechanical Engineering leads to ensure cohesive development efforts.
    • Work closely with Product Management and other business units to adapt to roadmap changes and align engineering priorities.
  • Supplier & Partner Engagement
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with contract manufacturers (CMs) and suppliers. Leverage partnerships to scale innovation and validation efforts across the supply chain.

Skills We’re Excited About

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in hardware development, with a strong background in:
    • Portable electronics, especially consumer electronics
    • Camera design
    • Battery charging and electronics
    • RF design and validation
    • Display technologies (LCD, OLED, etc.)
  • Proven experience managing engineering teams and working with international partners.
  • Strong understanding of product lifecycle, from concept through mass production.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Experience in consumer electronics, preferably in imaging or wearable devices.
  • Hands-on experience with consumer camera SOCs from vendors such as Qualcomm and Ambarella
  • Design experience with high-speed volatile memory and non-volatile memory
  • Design experience with image sensor interfaces such as MIPI and SLVS
  • Advanced facility with circuit design tools such as OrCAD and Altium
  • Familiarity with JDM/ODM development models.
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing and reliability testing.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems and firmware integration.

The pay range for this role is between $219,725 - $258,500. Actual pay within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including your residence location and prior work experience. Equity, benefits, and a discretionary bonus may be additional forms of compensation for this role and are not included in the provided pay range.
