About the Department


Schedule 21 hpw: Monday & Tuesday 9am-1pm, Wed & Thurs 8:30am-4pm

Must reside in Ocean, Monmouth, Burlington or Atlantic Counties.

  With guidance, assist life care center customers and activity staff with mobile library needs. Includes placing material requests, checking out materials, and visiting life-care centers with co-workers (in rotation) to deliver and pick up items.  Regularly correspond with activities directors at life-care facilities.  Help team with department/volunteer liaison meetings, workshops and volunteer celebrations. Assist with creating new customer welcome packets and marketing materials for department services promotion. Occasional outreach to promote library services, especially mobile library. 

Position Duties

  • Work independently to plan what items are required at each life care facility.
  • With guidance, present and demonstrate digital resources to mobile library patrons.
  • Collaborate with peers to create an newsletter for mobile library patrons, including gathering information and content development.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with life care center staff to act as a liaison between facility staff and customers.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.
  • Must possess mobility to work in standard office setting as well as mobile library delivery facilities, and be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have great communication and telephone skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to work harmoniously with peers, subordinates, and customers by actively creating an atmosphere of respect and inclusion
  • Ability to provide in depth Reader’s Advisory Services
  • Ability to understand and follow Ocean County Library policies and procedures
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the library including word processing, the library circulation and catalog modules, telephone system, photocopiers, fax machines, databases, etc.
  • Ability to meet Ocean County Library’s Reference Competencies Level I within one year of employment.
  • License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.

Other Qualifications

Library Assistant – entry level  Applicants will demonstrate the following: Genuine enthusiasm for serving and assisting a diverse public in having a positive experience at the library; professionalism; knowledge of basic arithmetic and ability to perform extensive alphabetizing beyond the first letter of a word; ability to listen to and understand a customer's request; ability to comprehend and follow written and/or oral one- or two-step instructions.     

Senior Library Assistant – full performance level  To be appointed as a Senior Library Assistant, applicants must meet Civil Service requirements which demonstrate a practical knowledge of library functions, services, terminology, techniques, procedures, and tools. Successful completion of one year (30 semester hour credits) in a librarian technician course at an accredited college or university can be substituted for the above experience.  Failure to apply for and successfully complete the Civil Service promotional examination process for Senior Library Assistant may result in demotion or termination.    

License:  Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey because the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
