Title: Human Resources Generalist
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Human Resources

Your Mission:
As a Human Resources Generalist, you will advance the mission of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa by supporting key people-focused areas of the organization, including recruitment and onboarding, benefits administration and injury reporting, and payroll backup. Your work will help ensure a strong, engaged, and supported workforce so that the ARL can continue providing exceptional care and services to animals and the community.

What You’ll Do:
You will manage full-cycle recruitment, from developing staffing strategies and sourcing diverse candidates to collaborating with hiring managers and attending career fairs. You will ensure a smooth and welcoming onboarding process for new employees, while also overseeing benefits administration and serving as a key resource for staff questions. You’ll manage the workers’ compensation program, handling claims reporting, case management, and communication between employees, supervisors, and third-party administrators. You will also support payroll by reviewing timecards, reconciling discrepancies, and serving as a backup for bi-weekly payroll processing to ensure accuracy and timeliness. Your role will include ensuring compliance with all applicable employment laws, providing ongoing education to staff, and contributing to HR projects that strengthen the ARL’s workplace culture.

What You Bring:
You hold a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field, or have equivalent work experience, with at least two years of HR experience preferred. You bring excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and a proven ability to meet deadlines through effective time management. You’re experienced in sourcing strategies for diverse roles, and you’re proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and HR systems such as ADP’s Recruitment Applicant Tracking System (or eager to learn quickly). You also have a strong understanding of employment laws, regulations, and best practices related to recruitment and HR compliance.

Working Conditions:
This role is primarily office-based, requiring prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. You must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally. As with all positions at the ARL, you may be exposed to animals and potential allergens such as pet dander, dust, and other airborne particles.
