The Assistant Team Lead, Accessioning and Specimen Processing is responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of the Accessioning and Specimen Processing Teams, including package sort and reconciliation, processing via electronic systems (Atlas and CareEvolve), troubleshooting sample issues, and effective communication with both the Remote Processing Follow-Up Team and Laboratory Leadership. The Assistant Team Lead plays a critical role in fostering team development through mentorship, training, and process improvement initiatives. This individual ensures compliance with quality standards, manages workflow efficiency, and provides ongoing feedback to team members while driving the team's overall success.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:    

  • Leadership & Team Oversight
    • Supervise daily operations of the processing teams to ensure accuracy, efficiency, adherence to deadlines, and maximize processing entry
    • Foster open communication between the laboratory, leadership, and other departments
    • Resolve escalated challenges and streamline workflows. 
    • Understand, assist, and escalate communication gaps between electronic systems (Atlas, Horizon Pre-Login, CareEvolve)
    • Mentor and coach team members to ensure skill development and professional growth
    • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to enhance individual and team performance
    • Oversee scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and balanced workload
  • Training & Development
    • Lead and oversee  the onboarding and training to ensure mastery of required skills
    • Develop and implement ongoing training programs for existing team members to address skill gaps and enhance performance
    • Promote a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment that supports team morale and productivity
  • Process Management & Reporting
    • Ensure daily reconciliation reports are complete, addressing discrepancies 
    • Generate and analyze reports to identify trends, ensure compliance, and recommend process improvements.
    • Generate and analyze team member performance metrics including production, quality and remote entry completeness.
    • Partner with cross-functional teams to implement value-add process enhancements for clients, internal departments and optimize operational efficiency.
  • Specimen Processor Role Execution
    • Perform accurate demographic and testing request entries using Electronic Lab Requisitions (ELR) “FLUID.”
    • Ensure missing information is communicated and logged to allow for follow up with clients promptly.
    • Actively participate in specimen processing tasks as needed to support team goals
  • General Requirements
    • Exhibit proficiency in all Specimen Processor competencies and act as a subject matter expert.
    • Ensure team compliance with safety standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Represent the organization professionally and positively, embodying a solution-oriented mindset.
  • Other Duties & Responsibilities
    • Participate in process improvements, including process definition, measurement analysis, and implementation of controls
    • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals 
    • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill  
    • Other duties as required and assigned.
    • Communicate with coworkers, clients, vendors, and visitors professionally and respectfully.
    • Ensure a tidy/clean workspace at all times


A Successful Candidate Must Possess:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences or related field preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a focus on quality and extreme confidentiality required
  • A minimum of two (2) years of operations and/or leadership experience is required; Aegis experience preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills are essential to success in this role
  • Positive approach and attitude in interactions 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to work on multiple tasks without sacrificing quality, attention to detail, and ability to interact with staff at all levels is required
  • Basic computer knowledge and technical skills including, but not limited to:
    • Ability to send, receive, and monitor emails and Teams channels
    • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute 
    • Experience and understanding of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office Suite
