About the Department

THIS IS A FULL-TIME, BENEFITED, TEMPORARY POSITION WITH LIMITED FUNDING THROUGH JUNE 30, 2026.  Funding for this position is reviewed each fiscal year and subject to budget approval.
 
This job opportunity is with the Meter Crew of Water Utilities.

This job classification description is intended to be generic in nature and not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities.  The specific tasks/duties may vary based on position assignment and as determined by the Town of Queen Creek.

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY


Positions assigned to this class are responsible for fulfilling utility work orders which may include assembling, installing, repairing, replacing, relocating, testing, maintaining and/or investigating a variety of equipment, fixtures, and/or water/wastewater delivery systems. 


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an intermediate level maintenance/trades classification in the utilities maintenance and operations job family. Incumbent(s) demonstrate working knowledge of routine work applications and troubleshooting/diagnosis, working independently and referring more complex issues to superiors. Assignments require learned skills and a good technical understanding of the basics.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification.  While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.

 

  • Prioritizes, completes and routes daily work orders for performing meter assemblies.
  • Installs, replaces, relocates, tests and maintains a variety of meters, including rereads, lockouts, flow and accuracy testing, unlocks, red tags notices, hydrant meters, temporary meters and related appurtenances.
  • Communicates with customers to perform inspections and resolve customer issues or complaints.
  • Locates existing facilities, resolves leaks and flow issues.
  • Maintains and tracks inventory and materials.
  • Reviews reports to identify errors, unusual account activity, recommends necessary adjustments, handles special investigations on meter discrepancies, identifies and corrects meter reading errors that affect billing, and monitors high profile accounts;  
  • Prepares and reviews various reports such as water leaks, damaged meters, water usage with no assigned water account, inaccurate/missing account data, water use on locked accounts, obstructed and unable to locate meters.
  • Performs research using sources that include on-line databases, other state and local organizations, Town and county databases, communication with other departments, and external customer contact.
  • Reviews reports daily to identify billing issues caused by meter operations and submits necessary changes to Customer Service;
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)

Education and Experience:  

High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Driver’s License;
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Distribution Grade I Certification or obtain within 6 months of hire;
  • Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.


KNOWLEDGE

  • Town’s subdivisions & streets;
  • Use of standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities including applicable software;
  • Applicable hand and power tools utilized in performance of duties;
  • Meter reading, usage, recording techniques and procedures;
  • Utilizing applicable hand and power tools;
  • Understanding of meter routes and the procedures for working them;
  • Customer service techniques, policies and procedures;
  • Mechanical component of meters and their functionality;
  • Mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.


SKILLS

  • Recognizing and resolving problems;
  • Utilizing electronic devices;
  • Utilizing applicable hand and power tools;
  • Writing legibly, comprehending, and making inferences from written material and verbal and/or written instructions;
  • Reading and interpreting street and aerial maps to locate routes and water meters;
  • Performing mathematical calculations and drawing logical conclusions;
  • Proficiently perform computerized data entry of information;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
