Job Description

Department and Site Details
Prospect Park Zoo is a 12-acre public facility on Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Park. The Zoo is open to the public 365 days a year. There are two animal exhibit buildings and two outdoor animal exhibit areas, several classrooms, maintenance buildings and offices.
The Security Department oversees a 24-hour unarmed patrol consisting of 11 security guards manning three shifts (8am-4pm, 4pm-12am, 12am-8am).
The Admissions Department consists of four full time ticket agents. There are two public access gates.
Management staff includes three full time employees: Manager, Assistant Manager, and Supervisor. The department reports to the Zoo Director and works closely with the zoo’s Operations and Maintenance Department. Guards and ticket agents are DC37 union members.
Principal Responsibilities
1.Manage day to day activities of the Security and Admissions Department. Collaborate with other departments to facilitate positive guest experiences.
2. Supervise Security Officers (Assistant Maintainers) and Admissions Department (Ticket Agents and Seasonal Ticket Aides) to ensure that employees are performing all duties according to departmental standards and in a satisfactory manner.
3. Provide consistently excellent customer service to zoo guests and fellow employees. Create a safe and welcoming environment for all zoo guests. Build a strong customer focused culture within the department.
4. Visit all areas of the facility daily to ensure safety of guests and employees.
5. Monitor all alarm (e.g. fire, intrusion, life support) and video systems.
6. Ensure that all department systems as assigned by Manager (e.g. alarm, video systems, lock/key/gate cards, change machines, coin counters, drop safes, etc.) are operating in a serviceable state. Manage relationship with systems vendor(s), and arrange repairs, as needed.
7. Conduct roll calls and make changes and adjustments to reflect the daily needs of the Department/Facility in the absence of the Manager or when assigned.
8. Coordinate Security and Admissions staffing and activities at zoo special events/rental events as assigned.
9. Work various shifts as assigned to maximize direct contact with department staff on all shifts.
10. Maintain schedules for Department staff to ensure proper coverage.
11. Assist zoo guests with first aid, lost & found, reuniting lost children with parents/guardians, and other security/safety needs. Secure and safeguard all lost/found property and properly document both acquisitions and dispositions in appropriate log book.
12. Complete required daily opening and closing tasks in accordance with established zoo operating procedures (e.g. cash management, stock and service animal feeders, overnight security reports, queuing/signage, Admissions revenue reports).
13. Implement and monitor safety and security plans to protect guests and staff working or attending special/rental events scheduled outside normal operating hours as assigned.
14. Serve on the Emergency Response Team.
15. Assist in monitoring PPZ service area parking and service gate to ensure adequate parking for approved staff and vendors.
16. Provide assistance to Manager to safeguard and maintain zoo firearms.
17. Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment including portable radios, emergency equipment, first aid supplies, etc. Advise Manager when supplies are needed.
18. Understand and implement emergency plans as indicated in the emergency manual. Ensure that all security officers are trained and understand their responsibilities during an emergency.
19. Maintain FDNY Certificates of Fitness as assigned (e.g. F07 Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor and S95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems) to fulfill job functions.
20. Assist in planning and executing emergency drills.
21. Manage the operation of animal feed machines, including, coin collection, restocking animal feed, and coordination with the Animal Department for acquiring animal feed. Coordinate repair and maintenance of machines.
22. Support cash management activities within the zoo. Conduct money transfers in cooperation with WCS Treasury Department and armored car representatives. Manage cash collection and delivery at all cashier locations within the zoo. Proof the Admissions safe to the designated amount and ensure sufficient amounts of coin and small bills are on site by utilizing cash exchange.
23. Monitor and report daily Admissions overages and shortages to WCS Treasury/Accounting.
24. Maintain training and knowledge in the use and management of the zoo’s POS Admissions software.
25. Complete required reports as assigned by Manager (e.g. daily attendance reports, accident investigation reports, daily facility reports).
26. Assist manager with employee recruitment, training, and performance management.
27. Represent WCS in a professional manner, establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, City and other government agencies, outside contractors, and the general public.

Qualification Requirements
1. Three years minimum experience supervising employees required. Previous security management, guest services management, or public safety experience preferred.
2. Basic computer skills to include email, word processing, spreadsheet, and Point of Sale software. Microsoft software (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Gateway POS skills preferred.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
4. Must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and variable shifts.
5. Valid NY, NJ or CT Driver’s license preferred.
6. First aid training & AED/defibrillator training preferred.
7. Must be able to successfully obtain a NYC rifle/shotgun permit and to successfully complete all required training in order to serve on the zoo’s Emergency Response Team.
8. Must be able to successfully obtain FDNY certification as a Fire/Emergency Drill Conductor.
Physical Requirements
The position requires work in office environments as well as outdoor work in all weather conditions. Tasks require manual dexterity for various tasks (e.g. computer keyboard, copier, mobile radios). Some tasks require kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
