About the Department

The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.  In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs.

The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section.  The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.

(Work Hours are 5:45 am – 2:30 pm)

Position Duties

  • Assists senior manager overseeing the work crew and trains coworkers in on-the-job training opportunities. 
  • Maintains required work records and prepares and submits required reports accurately and promptly. 
  • Plans work estimates resources and materials needed. Recommends purchases and receives deliveries. 
  • Set priorities for daily assignments. Performs inspections and uses mobile technology to enter information into the work order system (EAM). 
  • Operates Packer Truck while removing trash from 95-gallon cans and 55-gallon tip barrels. 
  • Leads workers on special events setup and breakdown. 
  • Leads crew to complete daily work orders to minimize complaints. 
  • Occasionally performs routine building and grounds maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures. 
  • Conducts routine inspections or special inspections as assigned. Keeps proper documentation of assessments and submits documentation to supervisors by deadlines. 
  • Working as a team member, assists with the loading, unloading, and transporting of recreational equipment and event items. 
  • Delegates and assists with special events deliveries and maintains inventory count. 
  • Monitors and supervises assigned crew in all aspects of weather-related emergencies. 
  • Monitors and aids in setting up special events and transporting stages requiring a CDL. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assists in monitoring programs and events. 
  • Maintains and keeps updated CDL licenses, endorsements, and DOT recertifications. 
  • Attends safety meetings and workshops. 
  • Ensures all equipment and supplies are defect-free and properly working. 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.   
  5. Commmercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of hire
  6. Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire obtainment of certifications including:
      • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; 
      • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
      • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
  7. Pass Commission medical examination.

Other Qualifications

This position may involve seasonal weekend work and seasonal work schedule adjustments. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects. The ability to lift 100 pounds is desirable.
